Call for Papers for Computational Aesthetics 2007 (CAe 2007),
held on June 20-22, 2007 in Banff, Alberta, Canada
http://innovis.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/cae2007/
Our ability to convey complex meaning and emotion by the clever
arrangement of symbols and signs is one of the most celebrated aspects
of our human heritage. If Aesthetics is defined as the interaction
between symbol and observer within a social context, then
Computational Aesthetics is the empirically based field that examines
applications of Aesthetics. Computational Aesthetics integrates
aspects of computer science, psychology, and the visual arts, with
particular focus on the mathematical and information theoretic aspects
of symbol processing by humans and computers. By combining insights
from these fields, Computational Aesthetics not only provides tools
for the graphics and visualization communities to increase the value
of displayed imagery and to avoid classical artifacts, but also
furthers our understanding of perception and meaning. Computer based
tools, resulting from Computational Aesthetics research, may also be
used to enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and
to expand the role of aesthetic design as a differentiating factor in
product development and retail sales.
We are pleased to announce the third workshop on Computational
Aesthetics, which will take place in Banff, Alberta, Canada on June
20-22, 2007. It is the third event on this topic following a Workshop
in 2005 in Girona, Spain, and a Dagstuhl seminar in Germany in
2006. This conference will bring together individuals with technical
backgrounds who are developing computer based tools to solve aesthetic
problems and people with artistic and design backgrounds who use these
new tools in their work. Invited talks will be given by leading
technical and artistic/design figures to help participants to better
understand what computer technology is capable of delivering and to
fully appreciate what is involved in the artistic and design
process. Refereed papers will also be presented to provide a snapshot
of the latest technical breakthroughs and the most recent artistic or
design achievements in applying computer based techniques to solve
aesthetic problems. The overriding goal of the conference will be to
facilitate a dialogue between the scientists and engineers who are
creating these new tools and the artists and designers who are the end
users.
Submissions are invited across the broad range of areas covered by
Computational Aesthetics. Specific examples include, but are not
limited to:
* Artistic Image Transformation Techniques (colors, edges,
patterns, dithering)
* Image Analogies, Style Transfer Methods
* Sketching, Simplification techniques (artistic, cognitive)
* Composition, Visual Balance, Layout
* Non-Photorealistic Rendering
* Image Style Analysis (Paintings, Photographs, others)
* Empirically based Metrics of Aesthetical Attributes
* Applied Visual Perception (Color Appearance, Spatial Vision,
and other aspects)
Submitted papers should be original, unpublished work of up to 8
pages. The manuscripts must be written in English. For more
information including paper formatting and submission guidelines see
the website at http://innovis.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/cae2007/ Please note
that this call for technical contributions is complemented by a call
for participation by experts in the visual arts, for details see the
website.

IEEE CG&A Call for Papers
3D Documents
Special Issue of IEEE CG&A, July/August 2007
Guest Editors
Dieter W. Fellner and Dietmar Saupe
Submissions Due: 20 October 2006
Author Notification: 17 January 2007
Final Versions Due: 20 March 2007
To expedite the review process we would appreciate it if authors
intending to submit a paper could send a title, author list, and
abstract to 3d-docs(a)cgv.tugraz.at by 2 October 2006.
Digital libraries (DLs), in general, and technical or cultural
preservation applications, in particular, offer a rich set of
multimedia objects like audio, music, images, videos, and, of course,
3D models. However, instead of handling these objects consistently as
regular documents-in the same way we handle text documents-most
applications handle them differently.
Looking at textual documents as being only one media type among many,
it becomes clear that this type of document is handled quite
specially. A full-text search engine permits retrieving a specific
document based on its content, that is, one or more words that appear
in it. Content-based retrieval of other media types is an active area
of research, and only pilot applications exist. The deficits in
handling nontextual documents are especially annoying in a situation
where the proportion of classical text (journals, books, and so on)
is decreasing. It becomes ever easier to create a digital image, a
video, or a 3D object-but our libraries, be it classical public
libraries or company internal repositories, are not equipped with the
right tools to provide all the services for nonstandard documents
that are available for books, journals, or technical spec sheets.
This is due to the fact that standard tasks like content
categorization, indexing, content representation or summarization
have not yet been developed to a stage where DL technology could
readily apply it for these types of documents. Instead, these tasks
have to be done manually making the activity almost prohibitively
expensive. Consequently, one of the pressing research challenges is
the development of an adequate vocabulary to characterize the content
and structure of nontextual documents as the key to indexing,
categorization, abstracting, dissemination, and access.
Even more pressing is the demand for having automated categorization
at hand-this is true even for those only taking pictures with digital
cameras and then just dumping them into folders where we can't find
particular pictures later on.
As more and more artifacts in the technical and engineering world are
digitally born the content categorization, the abstraction, the
adequate representation-which, by the way, must coexist with long-
term archival demands-is vital to all disciplines.
We solicit papers for this special issue that present innovative
results and concepts in the domain of 3D documents. Potential topics
to be covered include but are not limited to
* indexing,
* content classification,
* domain-specific metadata,
* domain-specific phrasing of search terms,
* automated markup,
* content-based retrieval,
* search by similarity / similarity measures,
* abstracting (that is, what's the 3D analogy to a thumbnail in
2D),
* semantic enrichment,
* avoiding the loss of model semantics in the classical graphics
process pipelines,
* transport (for example, over channels with limited bandwidth),
* semantic level of detail,
* interaction with 3D documents,
* navigation in (distributed) 3D documents,
* linking in 3D documents (that is, where and how to attach
links), and
* long-term storage.
Articles should be no more than 10 magazine pages, where a page is
800 words and a quarter page image counts as 200 words. Cite only the
12 most critical references, and consider providing technical
background in sidebars for nonexpert readers. Color images can be
interspersed through the article and should be limited to a total of
10. Visit CG&A style and length guidelines here.
Please submit your article using our online manuscript submission
service. When uploading your article, please select the appropriate
special issue title under the category Manuscript Type. Also include
complete contact information for all authors and coauthors in the
submission. If you have any questions about submitting your article,
please contact Alkenia Winston.

Dear Collegues,
Here is a call for participation to the SIGGRAPH XSV 2007 program. This
is quite a new program that was created last year. As an SIGGRAPH'06
XSV, I would like to encourage you and especially your ex-students who
are not a student anymore (ie who graduated) to apply, especially
exciting for anyone who would rather like a career in academia! This is
really a great opportunity for new researchers and I am willing to
answer any question (mailto:zabador@cg.tuwien.ac.at) you might have in
addition to the great website and FAQ prepared by Janet McAndless,
XSV2007 Chair.

Subject: SIGGRAPH Ex Student Volunteer Opportunity
SIGGRAPH 2007 XSV: Ex-Student Volunteer Mentoring Program
Call for Participation Deadline Approaching:
14 November 2006, 11:59pm Eastern time
Submission details are online here:
http://www.siggraph.org/s2007/volunteers/xsv/
Submission forms are online here:
http://www.siggraph.org/s2007/presenters/forms/index.html
Call For Participation:
Have you served or wanted to serve as a Student Volunteer for SIGGRAPH
2006, 2005, or 2004? Are you finished with school now and no longer
qualify for the Student Volunteers Program? If you'd like to stay
involved but are not exactly sure how, the XSV program may be right for
you.
SIGGRAPH 2007 wants to collaborate with you in this second year of a new
initiative. We seek a very few recent undergraduate or graduate students
who who are interested in SIGGRAPH conference volunteer work. Those
interested in ACM SIGGRAPH and starting careers in computer graphics and
interactive techniques will be selected for an opportunity to apprentice
with a SIGGRAPH 2007 committee or co-located symposium.
As an apprentice, you will be assigned to a specific committee and
mentored by the respective program/committee chair. With mentored
assistance, you will take on appropriate responsibilities within a team
of volunteers who work to make the conference a success. If you are
selected, your responsibilities may start as early as December 2006 and
continue until the conference is over in August 2007 (but not full time,
so don't worry too much about that).
This initiative promises to be very competitive. Only one position
exists for each of the following areas:
Art Gallery
Computer Animation Festival
Emerging Technologies / Emerging Display Technologies Workshop
Graphics Hardware 2007 symposium
GraphicsNet
Panels & Special Sessions
Sandbox Video Game Symposium
Sketches & Posters
NPAR (Symposium on Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering)
SCA (Symposium on Computer Animation)
If you're not familiar with an area above, but it sounds interesting,
check the SIGGRAPH 2007 web site or Google the name to gain more
information.
Interested candidates will not apply directly for the XSV program, but
must obtain 3 references to complete their applications (see
http://www.siggraph.org/s2007/volunteers/xsv/applying.html for details).
Any questions, let me know. Please also forward this announcement to any
others who may be interested.
