Fourth Eurographics Workshop on Sketch-Based Interfaces and Modeling (SBIM'07)
http://www.eg.org/sbm
University of California
Riverside, CA, USA
Thursday August 2 - Friday August 3, 2007
Aims and Scope
Most computer user interfaces continue to be based on the keyboard and
mouse. These are good for typing and pointing, but they lack the
naturalness, transparency, and ease-of-use of basic low-tech pencil
and paper. Modern pen computing hardware--in principle--enables fluid
drawing, sketching, and direct manipulation of both text and
graphics. To realize this potential requires effective user interface
designs and underlying algorithms to support them.
This workshop will explore techniques and technologies needed to
enable sketch-based interfaces. The foci will be on methods for
recognition of hand-drawn shapes and interpretation of diagrams and
sketches, and on applications of sketch-based interfaces to a variety
of domains such as 2D/3D graphics, CAD, diagram editing, and
note-taking. Empirical usability studies aimed at clarifying the
nature of sketch-based interfaces and comparing pen input to other
interaction techniques are also welcome.
The workshop is being held in cooperation with Eurographics and
ACM/SIGGRAPH, hence results and insights will be shared by researchers
from around the globe. The workshop dates of August 2-3 are just
prior to SIGGRAPH. The workshop location is Riverside, California,
1.5 hours by car from the SIGGRAPH venue in San Diego.
The two-day workshop will include paper presentations (single track),
a breakout session, coffee breaks, a conference dinner, and invited
talks. There will be a demo session in which participants have an
opportunity to demonstrate their systems and try out those of the
other participants. All are welcome to attend the workshop; submission
of a paper is not required for attendance. The proceedings will be
published in the EG Workshop series and made available online through
the Eurographics Digital Library. Summaries of previous Sketch-Based
Interfaces and Modeling Workshops can be explored at
http://www.eg.org/sbm.
Authors are invited to submit technical papers on topics including,
but not limited to:
* Low level ink processing
* Sketch segmentation
* Classification and recognition of hand-drawn sketches
* Multimodal interfaces for sketching
* Novel sketch input devices
* Rendering techniques for sketch-based interfaces (NPR)
* Usability studies of sketch-based systems
* Sketch-based interfaces for 2D/3D computer graphics (modeling,
animation, games, etc.)
* Sketch-based CAD systems
* Sketch-based interfaces for other applications (diagram editing,
math, etc.)
* Sketch-based retrieval of multimedia Information
Authors of workshop papers are encouraged to provide demos. We also invite:
* demos of rough ideas and work in progress.
* demos that present and critique commercial pen computing software
* demos of games and other novel applications making creative use of
sketch interfaces
Submission Procedure
Authors are requested to submit papers, no longer than 10 pages, with
the main body set in Eurographics Conference Paper Format. All
submissions are electronic. You can download a set of LaTeX style
files from the EG Conference Manager (MCP) (http://www.eg.org/sbm).
Each paper should contain title, authors' names and affiliations,
abstract, keywords, text, illustrations, and references. Detailed
guidelines will be available through the Workshop Site
(http://www.eg.org/sbm) under instructions for authors. Submissions
will be done electronically via the EG Conference Manager
(MCP). Papers will be accepted in PDF format only. Please contact the
conference organizers should you experience any problems with
electronic submission. Proceedings will be available on-line through
the Eurographics Digital Library and in paper book form in the
Eurographics Book Series. Paper selection will be based on technical
and scientific content and relevance to the workshop.
Those interested in providing a demo should submit a one-page abstract
of the proposed demo. If possible, the abstract should include a URL
for a video, screen images, etc.
Special Issue: Computers & Graphics

**************************************************************
AIMS AND SCOPE
Synthesizing realistic natural scenes is a challenging and
important problem in computer graphics. The challenge stems
not only from the complexity and diversity of objects and
natural phenomena interacting together, but also from the
huge amount of small details that should be modeled to obtain
realistic models and physically plausible simulations.
Therefore, there is still a need for interactive modeling and
simulation techniques capable for handling complex synthetic
sceneries. The purpose of this workshop is to explore novel
techniques for modeling, animating, simulating and rendering
complex natural phenomena.
The workshop will build on work done in recent years including
simulating aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant
modeling, ecosystem simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid
flows. It will focus on non-conscious or inanimate nature like
rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows (animals and humans as part
of nature should be excluded). Work in this area, promising as
it is, is still far from complete.
Authors are invited to submit technical papers in these
or related areas. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
* Plant structure modeling
* Ecosystem simulation
* Gaseous phenomena (clouds, fog, ...)
* Simulating liquid flows and rain
* Modeling fire and smoke
* Aging and weathering
* Terrain modeling
WORKSHOP FORMAT
The workshop will take place just before the Eurographics 2007

Call for Papers for Computational Aesthetics 2007 (CAe 2007),
held on June 20-22, 2007 in Banff, Alberta, Canada
http://innovis.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/cae2007/
Our ability to convey complex meaning and emotion by the clever
arrangement of symbols and signs is one of the most celebrated aspects
of our human heritage. If Aesthetics is defined as the interaction
between symbol and observer within a social context, then
Computational Aesthetics is the empirically based field that examines
applications of Aesthetics. Computational Aesthetics integrates
aspects of computer science, psychology, and the visual arts, with
particular focus on the mathematical and information theoretic aspects
of symbol processing by humans and computers. By combining insights
from these fields, Computational Aesthetics not only provides tools
for the graphics and visualization communities to increase the value
of displayed imagery and to avoid classical artifacts, but also
furthers our understanding of perception and meaning. Computer based
tools, resulting from Computational Aesthetics research, may also be
used to enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and
to expand the role of aesthetic design as a differentiating factor in
product development and retail sales.
We are pleased to announce the third workshop on Computational
Aesthetics, which will take place in Banff, Alberta, Canada on June
20-22, 2007. It is the third event on this topic following a Workshop
in 2005 in Girona, Spain, and a Dagstuhl seminar in Germany in
2006. This conference will bring together individuals with technical
backgrounds who are developing computer based tools to solve aesthetic
problems and people with artistic and design backgrounds who use these
new tools in their work. Invited talks will be given by leading
technical and artistic/design figures to help participants to better
understand what computer technology is capable of delivering and to
fully appreciate what is involved in the artistic and design
process. Refereed papers will also be presented to provide a snapshot
of the latest technical breakthroughs and the most recent artistic or
design achievements in applying computer based techniques to solve
aesthetic problems. The overriding goal of the conference will be to
facilitate a dialogue between the scientists and engineers who are
creating these new tools and the artists and designers who are the end
users.
Submissions are invited across the broad range of areas covered by
Computational Aesthetics. Specific examples include, but are not
limited to:
* Artistic Image Transformation Techniques (colors, edges,
patterns, dithering)
* Image Analogies, Style Transfer Methods
* Sketching, Simplification techniques (artistic, cognitive)
* Composition, Visual Balance, Layout
* Non-Photorealistic Rendering
* Image Style Analysis (Paintings, Photographs, others)
* Empirically based Metrics of Aesthetical Attributes
* Applied Visual Perception (Color Appearance, Spatial Vision,
and other aspects)
Submitted papers should be original, unpublished work of up to 8
pages. The manuscripts must be written in English. For more
information including paper formatting and submission guidelines see
the website at http://innovis.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/cae2007/ Please note

Eurographics 2008 - Crete -
Now that the deadline for full papers for Eurographics 2007 has passed
it is time to start thinking about writing a full paper for Eurographics
2008.
As announced at the General Assembly in Vienna, the conference is moving
to a spring-time slot (February to April period) with paper submission
deadline in late September/early October. In making this decision the
Executive Committee canvased a wide spectrum of interested parties and
concluded that this change would be in the best interests of the
research community so that the submission deadlines for Eurographics and
ACM SIGGRAPH conferences are now widely separated. This change is for a
three year trial period, starting in 2008.
We are delighted to announce that Eurographics 2008 will be held from 14
- 18 APRIL 2008 in Crete. The event is organized by the Foundation for
Research and Technology- Hellas (FORTH), one of the largest research
organisations in Greece, whose activities span a wide range of areas
including molecular biology, biomedical engineering, computer science
and robotics. The co-chairs of the event are Panos Trahanias (FORTH
Institute of Computer Science), Costantine Stephanidis (FORTH Institute
of Computer Science) and Nigel John (University of Wales, Bangor, UK).
The IPC Programme Chairs are George Drettakis (INRIA) and Roberto
Scopigno (ISTI Pisa).
As well as the conference dates, please note NOW in your diaries the key
deadlines for full papers:
+ Deadline for Abstracts: Sept. 21st
+ Paper deadline: Sept 26th
+ Notification of decisions: Nov 19th
The conference web site is under construction at
http://www.ics.forth.gr/eg2008 - please monitor this for news of the
event, details of the venue and the full composition of the organising
committee which will be announced shortly.
