Each year we have the opportunity to change the picture appearing on the cover of the journal. This is your opportunity to show the world what you can do, a competition for the photograph for the 2008 volume. The first prize winner gets 200 Euro, but the biggest prize is of course the fact that your picture will appear on all the 2008 issues, including the conference issue! The winner will be publicly announced at the closing session of the Eurographics 2007 conference in Prague (Czech Republic). Eurographics Launches the Eurographics 2007 Game Physics Innovation Competition =============================================================================== Following in the footsteps of the successful Eurographics 2006 Graphics meets Games competition, Eurographics is delighted to announce the Eurographics 2007 Game Physics Innovation competition which aims to showcase innovation in the use of physics technology in games. Physics has always played an integral part in the development of computer games, since the very earliest games like Space War which featured gravitational wells and inertial movement. More recently physics in games has become mainstream, with many commercial offerings from companies now pushing the boundaries of what is possible in top games. This competition aims to focus on what is next; what new physics techniques might be employed in future games, can physics help redefine the interface with the user or can entirely new game-play paradigms emerge when full physics simulations are employed? The competition, organised by Dr. Steven Collins (founder of Havok and Graphics Research Group manager, Trinity College Dublin) and Ladislav Kavan (Czech Technical University in Prague) which forms part of the Game Track in the forth-coming Eurographics Conference in Prague, September 3-7, 2007, aims to inspire a sharing of ideas and discoveries relating to physics innovation, and through the generous sponsorship of Sony Computer Entertainment US R&D, is offering prizes totalling over EUR 2000 to the winning entries: * Overall Prize: EUR 1,500 - awarded to the entry that in the judges opinion exhibited the best combination of innovation and technical achievement * Collada Prize: EUR 500 - awarded to the entry that makes the best use of the Collada standard. The challenge stems not only from the complexity and diversity of objects and natural phenomena interacting together, but also from the huge amount of small details that should be modeled to obtain realistic models and physically plausible simulations. Therefore, there is still a need for interactive modeling and simulation techniques capable for handling complex synthetic sceneries. The purpose of this workshop is to explore novel techniques for modeling, animating, simulating and rendering complex natural phenomena. The workshop will build on work done in recent years including simulating aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant modeling, ecosystem simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid flows. It will focus on non-concious or inanimate nature like rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows (animals and humans as part of nature should be excluded). Work in this area, promising as it is, is still far from complete. Authors are invited to submit technical papers in these or related areas. IEEE/EG International Symposium on Volume Graphics September 3-4, 2007 The Czech Technical University, Prague, Czech Republic http://vg.swan.ac.uk/vg07/ Volume graphics deals with the analysis, synthesis and presentation of volumetric objects, both static and time-varying. Specifically, it includes topics related to the acquisition, reconstruction and transformation of volume data as well as feature analysis, information extraction and rendering. Research papers are solicited that present original and unpublished results concerning all aspects of volume graphics. We especially invite research contributions that report computational techniques derived from existing knowledge in numerical analysis, signal processing and statistical modeling. Furthermore, papers are solicited which demonstrate the efficacy of the methods of volume graphics towards enhanced practices or understanding of specific applications in engineering, medicine and physical and biological sciences. This 6th occurrence of Volume Graphics has been changed from a Workshop to a Symposium and is again co-located with the Symposium on Point-Based Graphics 2007 as well as with the Eurographics 2007 Conference. The accepted papers will be published in IEEE/EG sponsored proceedings, and archived in electronic form in the Eurographics and IEEE online digital libraries. A selected number of submissions will be further considered for publication in a major journal in computer graphics and visualization.
