EUROGRAPHICS 2008
14-18 April 2008
The conference is now approaching rapidly, so if you have not done so
already, please register for the conference NOW and make your travel
plans. Remember, the conference is in April this year, not September!
The early bird registration deadline has been extended to *next
Wednesday, March 5th*.
When planning your travel, it might help you to know that there are
regular flights from Athens to Heraklion, both Olympic Airlines and
Aegean Airlines have regular flights on this route. It may be better to
find a cheap round-trip to Athens, and look up the Athens-Heraklion trip
separately, since this appears to give better prices in many cases. Low
cost airlines also operate from some European destinations, e.g. EasyJet
from London Gatwick, and some charter companies already have flights to
Heraklion (e.g., Air Mediterranee from Paris CDG). The new airport in
Athens incorporates domestic and international flights in the one building.
Please help us to spread the word about EG 2008. A great deal of effort
is going into organising the conference, and we have a very strong and
exciting technical programme. This is the first time that the conference
has been held in the spring-time, the community was very much in favour
of the change of time slot, so please help to make this event a success
by coming to Crete!
We look forward to welcoming you there.

Call for Papers
International Conference on Cyberworlds (CW 2008)
URL: http://www.china-vr.com/cw08/index.htm
Hangzhou, China
September 22-24, 2008
The conference Proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society
Press. Special issues in SCI journal(s) are being planned.
Cyberworlds are information worlds being formed on Internet either
intentionally or spontaneously, with or without design. As information
worlds, they are either virtual or real, and can be both. In terms of
information modeling, the theoretical ground for the Cyberworlds is far
above the level of integrating spatial database models and temporal database
models. This conference will deal with large distributed information worlds
on Internet and methods/tools used for creating such worlds.
This year, Cyberworlds 2008 (CW2008) will be held in Hangzhou, China.
Hangzhou has long been a famous tourist attraction. The widely expressed
Chinese proverb, "in heaven there is paradise and on earth there are
Hangzhou and Suzhou" combined with the words of Marco Polo who described
this place as, "the most beautiful and magnificent city in the world" have
helped to make Hangzhou one of the biggest tourist attractions in the entire
country.
Conference Topics
. Philosophy, evolution, and ethics of Cyberworlds
. Cyberworlds and their impact on the real worlds
. Telemedicine, healthcare in Cyberworlds
. Mobile computing, mobile graphics, mobile game
. E-learning, web-based learning and edutainment
. Intelligent agents in Cyberworlds
. Digital watermarking, Internet security, information hiding
. Distributed virtual environments

SG08: 8th International Symposium on SMART GRAPHICS
http://www.smartgraphics.org/
Aug 27-29 2008
Rennes, France
submission deadline Apr 7th, 2008
Graphics become Smart Graphics when their design and implementation are
grounded in an understanding of human abilities, activities, and
motivations from design experience and the broad spectrum of cognitive
and social sciences.
When knowledge from these diverse fields is combined with new methods,
tools and techniques in AI, HCI and computer graphics, environments are
created that
(1) engage the user and are esthetically satisfying;
(2) participate in human cognition as external or distributed
representations;
(3) are sensitive to the real-time demands of the interaction in the
context of the available informational and computational resources;
(4) adapt the form of the output according to a wider set of constraints
such as an individual's perceptual, attentive, and motor abilities
and the nature of the presentation media and available interaction
devices.
The International Symposium on Smart Graphics aims at gathering people
from the fields of Cognitive Science, Computer Graphics, Artificial
Intelligence and Graphics Design to share experiences and experiments in
this new and emerging area of study.
*** Come and Join the Smart Graphics Experience ***
Smart Graphics 2008 welcomes submissions from researchers and
practitioners, as well as artists and graphic designers interested in
an interdisciplinary approach to the design of smart interactive visual,
auditory, and haptic displays.
Submission categories are divided into:
* Full papers: these will encompass comprehensive descriptions of original
work within the scope of the symposium (limited to 12 pages in Springer
LNCS format).
* Posters: tentative or preliminary results of research or design work
with emphasis on the interdisciplinary evaluation of the ideas (limited
to 4 pages in Springer LNCS format). Poster papers will be included in
the proceedings.
* System demonstrations: short descriptions of research or design work
that the authors intend to show and discuss in a demo session at the
symposium (limited to 2 pages in Springer LNCS format). System
demonstration papers will be included in the proceedings.
Smartgraphics specially encourages young researchers to submit their ideas
and results. The best full paper and best poster, which first authors
are students, will receive a 500 euros prize each donated by the Metivier
Foundation. As in previous conferences, proceedings will be published in the
Springer Lecture Note in Computer Science (LNCS) series.
Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to):
* information visualization
* visual analytics
* graphical abstraction
* multimodal information presentation
* non-desktop interfaces
* user interaction
* sketch-based interfaces
* interaction science
* scene perception
* cognitive sciences
* user studies
* computer graphics
* artificial intelligence
* virtual and mixed reality
* graphics design
This year, we propose a specific emphasis on interaction in virtual
reality as well as on constraint techniques in user interfaces.

Computational Aesthetics 2008
http://computational-aesthetics.org
June 18-20, 2008, Lisbon, Portugal
Keynote Speakers: Pat Hanrahan, Stanford, CA and Ernest Edmonds, UT Sydney
You are invited to participate in the fourth annual Symposium on Computational
Aesthetics that will take place at the Hotel Riviera in Lisbon, Portugal from
18-20 June 2008.
Computational Aesthetics bridges the analytic and synthetic and integrates
aspects of computer science, philosophy, psychology, and the fine & performing
arts. In particular it focuses on the mathematical and information theoretic
aspects of both connectionist and symbol processing methods by humans and
computers.
Computational Aesthetics seeks to facilitate both the analysis and the
augmentation of creative behaviour. It investigates the creation of tools that
can enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and furthers our
understanding of aesthetic evaluation, perception and meaning. Invited talks
will be given by individuals involved in the technical, artistic and theoretical
aspects of this young field to help participants to better understand what
aesthetics is, what computer technology is currently capable of delivering, and
to appreciate what is involved in the creative process.
Technical submissions are invited across the broad range of areas covered by
Computational Aesthetics (for the Call for Participation by experts in the
visual arts, see the website). Specific examples include, but are not limited to:
• Computational analysis and modelling of creative behaviour (AI, A-life)
• Artistic Image Transformation Techniques (colours, edges, patterns, dithering)
• Image Analogies, Style Transfer Methods
• Image Style and Salience Analysis (Paintings, Photographs, others)
• Visualization (perceptual or aesthetics based)
• Sketching, Simplification techniques (artistic, cognitive)
• Composition, Visual Balance, Layout
• Non-Photorealistic Rendering
• Empirically based Metrics of Aesthetical Attributes
• Applied Visual Perception (Colour Appearance, Spatial Vision, and other aspects)
Paper Submission:
Submitted papers should present original, unpublished work. The manuscripts must
be written in English, must be formatted according to the EG publication
guidelines, and can be no longer than 8 pages. The accepted technical and art
papers will be presented at the symposium and will appear in the proceedings,
which will be published by Eurographics, distributed by AK Peters and appear in
the Eurographics and ACM Digital Libraries. For more information including paper
formatting and submission guidelines see the website at
