Call for Papers
--------------------
-Towards a "digital agenda" for the integration of technologies into
Archeology and Cultural Heritage-
Nearly every organization whose mission includes promoting access to
cultural information, is well aware of the value of digital applications,
and digital technologies are finding their way into cultural organizations.
Nevertheless, a clear-cut division still exists between humanities
researchers, computer science researchers, information scientists,
librarians, and campus technologists, which prevents a complete achievement
of the potential represented by the integration of these disciplines. Each
community has distinctive practices, lingo, assumptions, and concerns.
Understanding technology needs of the humanities, and more specifically of
Archaeology, Libraries and Cultural Heritage, has particular relevance to
the future of knowledge and education delivery, as well as, to develop
shared technology services to enhance humanities research now and in the
future.
The main goal of this VAST is to bring together professionals from all
fields to start a true dialogue on CH needs and ICT solutions and achieve a
true integration of disciplines. This VAST aims at disseminating the idea of
a more systematic integration of digital practices in research and education
programs for CH, exploring good practices, guidelines and skills development
possibilities to structure long-term initiatives and move towards a "digital
agenda" for Archaeology, Libraries and CH.
This is why we are seeking contributions that advance the state of the art
in the technologies available to support sustainability of human heritage.

- BEST PAPERS AWARD -
The best papers presented at VAST 2009 will be selected for re-submission on
a special edition of the upcoming ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural
Heritage (JOCCH), an online, peer reviewed publication.
- (NEW!) VAST-STARs -
VAST 2009 introduces the "VAST-STate-of-the-Art Reports (VAST-STARs)",
inspired by the EG STARs. These are papers providing useful novel overviews
of research in the fields of computer graphics, computer science and
related fields that can benefit the multidisciplinary nature of VAST. They
are survey papers in what the community considers important areas that have
not been covered before or recently. Their aim is to give a detailed account
of the principles, algorithms and open problems of a research area, so that
an interested reader can quickly become up to speed in this field. We
warmly encourage all colleagues to submit to the VAST-STARs reports. The
VAST-STARs will be published with the full papers and are also eligible for
the best paper award. Two VAST-STARs will be selected by peer review and
will be published in the EG proceedings together with the full papers.
VAST-STARs authors will present their work with a 60 minute presentation
during VAST 2009.
- PAPER SUBMISSIONS -
We are soliciting five types of contributions:
=Full research papers presenting new innovative results. These papers will
be published by Eurographics in a high-quality proceedings volume.
=VAST-STARs providing a useful novel overview of research in the fields of
computer graphics, computer science and related fields that can benefit the
multidisciplinary nature of VAST.
=Project papers focusing on on-going projects, the description of project
organization, use of technology, and lesson learned not innovative technical
content. These papers will have an oral presentation and will be included in
a "Projects & Short Papers" proceedings volume. Authors will have the option
to present a poster during the breaks to provide more information regarding
the project.
=Short papers presenting preliminary ideas and works-in-progress. These
papers will have an oral presentation and will be published in the "Projects
& Short Papers" proceedings volume.
=Tutorials and Workshops: half-day and full-day working sessions that
provide an opportunity to educate and share on key topics of interest
face-to-face. Tutorial submissions will be published in the "Projects &

Instructions for Submission
---------------------------
All contributions submitted to Eurographics Symposium on Rendering
2009 must be original, unpublished work. Any work that has previously
been published or simultaneously been submitted in substantially
similar form to any other conference or journal will be
rejected. Contributions must be written and presented in English.
Only electronic submissions will be accepted. Submitted manuscripts
should be formatted using the Eurographics publication style
proceedings templates, and be anonymized for the double-blind
reviewing process.
Papers should be as long as their content requires, but not
longer. Papers with average length requirements are expected to be 8
formatted pages long, including references and all figures; up to 10
pages will be allowed only where justified. During the review process,
each paper's contribution will be judged in proportion to its length:
a solid contribution described clearly and succinctly is more likely
to be accepted than the same result submitted in a longer paper.
All submissions must be made through the Eurographics Submission and
Review Management system, using the following URL.
http://egmcp1.cgv.tugraz.at/SRM_SR2009
The submission deadlines will be strictly enforced. The authors of
each accepted paper need to complete and return the EG Copyright
Assignment Form before the paper can be published.
SBIM 2009
Sixth Eurographics/ACM Symposium on Sketch-Based Interfaces and Modeling
August 1-2, 2009, New Orleans, LA USA
Co-located with SIGGRAPH 2009
Advances in pen-based computer hardware have enabled digital
sketch-based interfaces to emerge as a powerful way to combine the
quick and intuitive feel of paper with the power of computation.
However, fully realizing the potential of these sketch-based systems
requires effective user interface design and underlying algorithms to
analyze the input. The goal of this symposium is to explore models,
algorithms and technologies needed to enable effective sketch-based
interfaces. It investigates novel methods for classification and
recognition of hand-drawn shapes, and the ways of using these
techniques for creating or editing digital models, from text,
mathematics, and 2D diagrams to 3D shapes. Likewise, the symposium
explores the application of sketch-based interfaces to 3D computer
graphics, animation, and CAD, as well as other specific applications
such as diagram editing and note taking.. Finally, the symposium
welcomes empirical user studies aimed at clarifying the nature of
sketch-based interfaces and comparing them to other interaction
techniques.
Created in 2004, SBIM provides a unique venue for researchers,
students and practitioners interested in sketch-based techniques to
interact with one another, share lessons learned, show new results and
discuss open issues. This year, the symposium will be held in New
Orleans, Louisiana and will be co-located with the 36th International
Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive
Techniques (ACM SIGGRAPH 2009). The two-day symposium will include
paper presentations (single track), coffee breaks, a social event, and
a keynote talk by Dr. Mark Gross of Carnegie Mellon University. All
are welcome to attend SBIM; submission of a paper is not required for
attendance. The proceedings will be published in the EG Symposia
series and made available online through the Eurographics and ACM
Digital Libraries.
Authors are invited to submit original papers on topics in pen-based
2D and 3D modeling, sketch recognition, and pen-based interface
design, including, but not limited to:
Multimodal interfaces for sketching
Novel sketch input devices
Novel pen-based interaction techniques
Low level ink processing and pen stroke segmentation
Sketch parsing, classification and recognition
Sketch-based interfaces for CAD systems
Sketch-based modeling and editing of 3D shapes
Sketch-based control of animations
Sketch-based interfaces for other applications
(surface editing, diagram creation, mathematical annotations, games, etc.)
Rendering techniques for sketch-based systems (NPR)
Sketches for Medical and Volume data editing
Sketch-based retrieval of multimedia information
Usability studies of sketch-based systems
Studies of the impact of sketching on creativity and design

Call:
A new wave of interactive 3D applications rises from the World Wide
Web. New technologies are emerging and existing technologies are
evolving to enable the third dimension in web browsers. This also
leads to the appearance of a new generation of consumers and producers
of 3D content in the new Read-Write Web environment.
14th in the series, the Web3D 2009 International Symposium will
address this wide range of topics covering 3D hypermedia on the web.
The annual Web3D Symposium is a major event, which unites researchers,
developers, experimenters, and content creators in a dynamic learning
environment. Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing,
and creating new 3D web and multimedia technologies, such as X3D,
VRML, COLLADA, Croquet, MPEG4, Java3D, and Canvas3D. The symposium
will also address new trends such as interactive 3D graphics
applications on mobile devices.
Authors are invited to submit their work (short or full papers) for
review by the international Program Committee. Both research and
applications papers are of interest to Web3D 2009. The papers must be
innovative and contribute to the advancement of 3D multimedia
technologies on the web.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Interactive 3D graphics and immersive systems for servers, desktop
and thin clients
* High-performance 3D graphics for Virtual Worlds, MMO environments,
Mixed and Augmented Reality, and interactive on-line gaming
* Animated humanoids and complex reactive characters
* Integration and interoperation between 3D documents and web/
multimedia technologies, including the Semantic Web
* Methods for modeling and rendering complex geometry, structures and
behaviors
* User-interface paradigms and interaction methods for real-time 3D
graphics and virtual environments
* Innovative 3D web applications in industry, science, medicine,
culture, cultural heritage, entertainment and education
* Novel 3D content creation technologies and tools -- including both
on-line and off-line content creation
* Interactive 3D graphics for mobile devices like Smartphones, PDAs
and UMPCs
* X3D Earth and geospatial applications, including interoperability
with Open Geospatial Consortium standards
Authors are invited to submit full papers of up to 9 pages (including
figures and references) or short papers of up to 4 pages (including
figures and references) in PDF format via the Symposium Submission
Site. Papers must be formatted using the document templates for
conferences sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH. After acceptance, the final
revised paper is required also in camera-ready electronic form.
Accepted papers will appear in the Symposium Proceedings, published by
ACM Press.
