The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath seeks a
Professor of Visual Computing. The successful candidate will be an
internationally leading academic who will contribute to leading and
enhancing the Department. The Department is structured in four
groups: Visual Computing, Human-Computer Interaction, Intelligent Systems
and Mathematical Foundations.
Currently including seven academic staff and associated researchers, the
Visual Computing group has broad interests bound together by the
contemporary movement of vision and graphics convergence. Research includes
body and face tracking, motion capture, acquisition of natural phenomena and
buildings, 3D geometry, 2D shape, and object recognition. The group
regularly publishes in leading conferences and journals. It currently holds
over £12M in research funding, including the new EPSRC Centre for the
Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA). In
addition, the group hosts the £20M Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE),
in which research students are co-supervised by world-leading industrial
researchers.
Partners include The Imaginarium, The Foundry, the BBC, Double Negative, and
many others. The group enjoys collaborations with academics including
Cardiff, Loughborough, UCL, Tsinghua, Zhejiang and KAUST. The group also
contributes to the international community through its work on steering
committees, editing journals and other activities.
This opportunity arises following the retirement of Professor Phil Willis,
Director of the CDE. The successful candidate may assume the Directorship
of the CDE, subject to negotiation with the University and EPSRC. The
successful candidate will also be expected to conduct excellent research,
with the ability and desire to collaborate effectively and productively with
colleagues across the University and beyond.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to engage with our
existing research activities. The post holder will also be expected to take
the lead in developing his or her own research funding portfolio from
appropriate national and international sources, and to carry out and
supervise research in line with the Departments strategy and targets.
The post holder will be expected to contribute to teaching at undergraduate
and postgraduate levels and should be able to demonstrate a continuing
commitment to maintaining the Universitys high standards in teaching and
learning, with the ability to educate and inspire some of the brightest
students in the country.
The post holder will also be expected to contribute to the leadership and
management of the Department and group.
The Department and University are committed to providing a supportive and
inclusive working environment. We are working to improve the gender balance
within the Department and particularly welcome applications from women.
Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date for
applications.
For information and to apply see:

Applications are invited for a Research Associate in Interactive Virtual and
Augmented Reality to work in a major new research centre at the University
of Bath. We are seeking a talented and motivated researcher with excellent
track record in human-computer interaction and/or 3D computer graphics. The
post holder will work closely with computer vision and motion capture
experts to research, develop and evaluate innovative 3D environments and
interaction techniques for virtual and augmented reality.
The Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and
Applications (CAMERA) is an exciting EPSRC funded large-scale research
collaboration between the Department of Computer Science, the Department for
Health and external partners at the University of Bath.
CAMERA has over £10m of initial research commitment, including around £4m
from the Engineering and Physical Science Research Council (EPSRC), and an
expectation for growth and long-term sustainability beyond the current
5-year funding. CAMERA aims to create impact in the areas of entertainment,
human performance enhancement and assistive technologies. A central theme
is the development and application of human motion capture, VR and AR in
these areas. CAMERA has several world-class partners including BMT, The
Imaginarium, The Foundry, Ministry of Defence, and British Skeleton.
CAMERA has a world-class motion capture studio, including a range of full
body and facial capture systems, inertial sensing, multi-camera 4K arrays,
and VR and AR technologies. CAMERA has several research strands. In the VR
and AR strand, we aim to research and develop innovative techniques and
experiences in which people can interact with other people and things in
virtual and augmented environments.
Using advances in motion capture, 3D modelling and rendering, and
human-computer interaction, we aim to make these experiences more
controllable, realistic and natural.
The principal aim of this post is to conduct research to enable these
developments and to produce world leading publications and other appropriate
outputs. In addition to these duties, the post holder will be involved in
the supervision of PhD students and some teaching.
Commercial activities through CAMERA are also possible. The post holder is
expected to work closely with other CAMERA staff, especially with
researchers working on related areas of VR and AR.
The Department and the University are committed to providing a supportive
and inclusive working environment. We are working to improve the gender
balance within the Department and particularly welcome applications from
women.
This position is offered on a full-time, fixed-term contract (up to 24
months) basis. The start date is anticipated to be as soon as possible from
1 June 2016.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS & VISUAL COMPUTING 2016 (CGVC 2016)
The 34th Annual Conference organised by the UK chapter of the Eurographics
Association,
15-16 September 2016, Bournemouth University, UK,
<http://www.eguk.org.uk/CGVC2016/> http://www.eguk.org.uk/CGVC2016/

The annual EGUK conference is a meeting place for all those in the UK
working in computer graphics and visual computing. It attracts researchers
from across the country and from further afield.
The 2016 conference Computer Graphics & Visual Computing will be an
overnight meeting (lunchtime to lunchtime). The conference wants to focus on
increasing the dialogue between academic research groups, researchers in
academic and in industrial developments. In order to facilitate such
dialogue, we are seeking contributions mainly in the form of extended
abstract and industrial demonstrations. However, we also welcome submissions
of full papers.
Full papers - a paper of 4 to 8 pages describing completed research. Papers
will be refereed by members of the EGUK programme committee. Authors of
accepted papers will be expected to give a 20 minute presentation at the
conference. Accepted papers will appear in the Eurographics digital library
and will count as full paper publications.
Extended abstract - an abstract of up to 1000 words, plus figures and
references. An extended abstract can describe work in progress, interim
results, industrial work, or research presented more fully elsewhere.
Extended abstracts will also be refereed by a panel drawn from the EGUK
programme committee. All accepted extended abstracts will be presented as
posters in a poster session and authors of selected submissions will also be
expected to give a 15 minute presentation at the conference.
Industrial project abstracts - a technical abstract of 1 to 4 pages,
demonstrating implementations and/or product development. Technical
abstracts will be presented at the conference site as large format posters
during a poster session.
Accepted abstracts will appear in the Eurographics digital library. An
extended abstract and industrial project abstract will not be considered as
a full paper publication, instead being similar to a SIGGRAPH one‐page
sketch or to a conference poster without an associated paper. As such,
presenting an extended abstract at this conference has no effect on your
ability to publish a fuller version of the same work in another venue. See
full instruction at the conference website.
