Topic
Computer-aided design (CAD) is the use of computer systems to aid in the
creation, modification, anal- ysis, or optimization of a design. Most CAD
software is traditionally based on NURBS spline surfaces. In recent years
subdivision surfaces are becoming increasingly important for the development
of high quality surfaces involved in CAD. Since the first time they were
used in Pixars movie Geris game, they had great success in the entertainment
industry and they are now widely supported in nearly all modern modeling
programs for graphic applications. Their flexibility and the fact that some
subdivision surfaces represent a superset of the standard Non-Uniform
Rational B-Spline (NURBS) representation (see, e.g., [7, <> 4]) <> easily
suggests that they can be the future description form of all geometric data.
A subdivision surface is a method of representing a smooth surface via a
specification of a coarser piecewise linear polygon mesh, the control mesh.
A subdivision scheme is an iterative refinement which generates a sequence
of finer and finer nets which converge to a smooth surface. Despite its
simple iterative approach, the analysis of subdivision surfaces is hard and
it has taken the last 40 years to understand exactly what characteristics a
subdivision surface has in the limit. We now know that most reasonable
schemes will have continuous tangent plane everywhere, and that it is
possible to choose the coefficients so that the curvature remains bounded,
though not quite constant in any region around irregular points [3, <> 2,
<> 1]. <>
The successful applicant will be working on aspects of geometry processing
in order to improve the usability of subdivision surfaces.
Description of the project:
We are looking into improving the creation of subdivision control meshes
from point clouds to apply subdivision surfaces in CAD and analysis.
The evolution of 3D scanning devices and innovation in computer processing
power and storage capacity has sparked a revolution in producing big
point-cloud datasets. The big point-cloud datasets have caused complexity in
handling surface reconstruction and visualization since existing algorithms
are not readily available. In this project we aim to solve problems
involving big point-cloud datasets from 3D scanning devices by converting
the data to a mathematical representation, namely subdivision surfaces. This
research can take a range of directions. One path we like to explore is
applying deep learning to obtain good control meshes. What defines a good
control mesh depends on the context in which the mesh will be used. We are
investigating ways in which surface geometry for design and analysis can be
modelled in the same framework based on subdivision surfaces [5, <> 6]. <>
The research has multidisciplinary aspects drawing from computer science,
mathematics, engineering and physics.
Requirements:
We are seeking an excellent and highly motivated PhD student interested in
the fields of Computer Graphics, Geometry Processing, Computer Aided Design
(CAD), Simulation and Analysis.
A master degree in applied/computational mathematics or a closely related
field is required with excellent grades. The applicant ideally has a good
understanding of geometric modelling and processing, and/or finite element
methods. Due to the computational nature of the project, programming skills
(in Fortran/C++/Matlab) are also required. Additionally, some background in
mesh processing (and/or computer aided geometry design) will be highly
desirable.
The selected candidates are expected to join by 1st of April 2018 or as soon
as possible thereafter.
Opportunities:
What we offer in exchange:
A creative environment in Graz, one of the most beautiful and lively
cities in Austria.
A young and international team of researchers with an excellent working
atmosphere.
A work environment that is equipped with the newest hardware and
software technology.

which is paid 14x per annum. As a PhD researcher at TU Graz you are also
entitled to full social benefits.
Freedom to explore your scientific interests in the course of your work
(within the scope of the project goals).
Continuing personal and professional education.

COMPUTER GRAPHICS & VISUAL COMPUTING 2018 (CGVC2018)
The 36th Annual Conference organised by the UK chapter of the Eurographics
Association,
13-14 September 2018, Swansea University, UK
http://www.eguk.org.uk/CGVC2018/
======================================================
The annual EGUK conference is a meeting place for all those in the UK
working in computer graphics and visual computing (including, Computer
Graphics and Vision, Information and Scientific Visualization, and Visual
Analytics). It attracts researchers from across the country and from further
afield.
The 2018 conference Computer Graphics & Visual Computing will be an
overnight meeting (lunchtime to lunchtime). The conference wants to focus on
increasing the dialogue between academic research groups, researchers in
academic and in industrial developments. In order to facilitate such
dialogue, we are seeking contributions in the form of full papers, short
papers, viewpoint papers, and extended abstracts (poster papers).
? Full papers - a paper of 4 to 8 pages describing completed research, plus
an additional page of references. Papers are refereed by members of an
international program committee (IPC). Authors of accepted papers are
expected to give a 20 minute presentation at the conference. Accepted papers
will appear in the Eurographics digital library and will serve as full paper
publications.
? Short papers - The purpose of short papers is to present late-breaking
results, work-in-progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of
existing methods. Short papers will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage
double-blind process by an international program committee (IPC). They will
be electronically archived and are fully citable publications. Submissions
for the short paper track should be at most 4 pages, with an additional page
allowed for references. Accepted short papers will be presented orally at
the conference in (approximately) 15 minute presentations.
? Viewpoint Papers (aka. Position paper, ***new in CGVC2018***) - Viewpoint
paper track enables researchers a new possibility to publish their ideas.
Viewpoints articles offer detailed technical opinions on trends in visual
computing or reports on how visual computing has contributed to the
comprehension of data or phenomena, without the need to present completed
research work and/or validated results. We encourage discussions of
challenges or limitations in today's methods and areas of potential new
topics of research. We are also interested in application discussions that
focus on, for example, the areas of physical, life or social sciences,
engineering, or commerce, or areas related to the process of visual
computing in general. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from
practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual
computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers
are submitted with author names and affiliations (at most 4-pages). Accepted
viewpoint papers will be electronically archived, are fully citable

3D Object Retrieval Workshop Series
------------------------------------------------
Search engines are now the default way in which most people engage with
information, as the vast majority of information is born digital. Also, a
new wave of information is underway: low-cost 3D scanners, 3D printers, and
powerful modeling software have made 3D models appeal to an increasing
audience. Repositories of 3D objects are rapidly growing in both number and
size. Yet, the task of exploring such large 3D repositories and retrieving
the models of interest remains a challenging problem. It is crucial to
develop algorithms for content-based searching of 3D object collections;
creating compact and accurate descriptors for 3D objects; creating efficient
storage structures for databases of 3D objects; investigating theoretical
aspects of practical importance, such as the definition of the similarity
concept; interfaces for content-based 3D object search; visualization
techniques for 3D search results; real time aspects of techniques and
algorithms; new challenges such as faceted 3D browsing, social search, and
navigation of hybrid datasets. The complex yet concrete problems above are
drawing increasing attention from the research community.
The aim of the 3DOR Workshop series is to stimulate researchers from
different fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine
Learning, Cognitive Science and Human-Computer Interaction who work on or
are interested in 3D object retrieval search and exploration, to present
state-of-the-art work in the field or learn about it and participate in
discussions. This will provide a cross-fertilization that will stimulate
discussions on the next steps in this important research area. 3DOR 2017
will be the 10th workshop in this series.

===============================================
Eurographics Symposium on Rendering
July 2-4, 2018
Karlsruhe, Germany
http://cg.ivd.kit.edu/egsr18/
===============================================
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Eurographics Symposium on Rendering 2018 will take place at the
Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe, Germany from July 2nd to
July 4th, 2018. This 29th event continues the series of highly successful
Eurographics Symposia and Workshops on Rendering.
EGSR has two different tracks: the Experimental Ideas & Implementations (EI
& I) track, and the Computer Graphics Forum (CGF) track. Authors have the
choice of submitting their work to the CGF track, the EI & I track, or both.
The CGF track continues the tradition of disseminating the state-of-the-art
scientific results in rendering and related fields. Accepted papers in this
track will be published in an issue of Computer Graphics Forum after a full
journal-style peer review, including a rebuttal and a second review cycle.
The EI & I track emphasizes criteria such as whether the idea is stimulating
and provides valuable insights to the rendering community, while the
requirements on comparisons to related work and citations are relaxed. It
thus serves as a venue for soliciting exciting new ideas that have not yet
been fully validated according to the high academic standards of the CGF
track, or that describe interesting implementation issues for known
algorithms in practical industry-scale uses. Papers in this track will
undergo full double-blind peer review, and will be published in the EGSR
conference proceedings series and in the Eurographics Digital Library, but
not the CGF journal. There is neither a rebuttal nor a second review cycle,
however. As is common for conference papers, authors have the opportunity to
build upon their work, add comparisons and validation, and submit to a
journal later. Please the FAQ below for further information on the EI & I
track.
For both tracks, we are looking for work that shapes the future of rendering
and related fields. We would like to emphasize that the conference is not
exclusively about rendering, and we encourage submissions in the related
topics of appearance modeling, virtual/augmented reality, computational
displays, fabrication, and hardware architectures.
Neither track imposes a fixed maximum paper length. However, submissions
over 12 pages in length will be treated as exceptional cases, and length
must be proportional to contribution.
If a paper is submitted to both tracks, the paper will initially be reviewed
using the CGF process, and reviewers will be unaware of the dual-track
submission. If such a paper is rejected from the CGF track, it will then
undergo an accelerated EI & I review.
Core conference topics include (but are not limited to):
* Global illumination
* Real-time and offline rendering
* Statistics and machine learning-based techniques for image synthesis
* Acquisition, modeling, and manipulation of light transport &
appearance
* Realistic, non-photorealistic, 2D, and 3D image processing &
synthesis
* Computational photography, optics & displays
* Human perception of rendered images
* Image synthesis for augmented or virtual reality
* Software and hardware systems/architectures for rendering
* Audio/sound rendering
Important dates (applying to both CGF and EI&I tracks unless specifically
indicated):
* Abstract deadline: 2 April 2018
* Papers deadline: 6 April 2018
* Reviews due: 5 May 2018
* Rebuttals due: 14 May 2018 (CGF track)
* Author notification: 25 May 2018
* Final papers due: 1 June 2018
* Final notification: 8 June 2018
All times are 23:59 (midnight) UTC.
We hope to see you and your work in Karlsruhe!

Frequently Asked Questions about the Experimental Ideas & Implementations
Track
Q: What's the process to publish an extended journal version of my EI & I
paper?
A: Once you have a paper accepted in the EI & I track and published in the
conference proceedings, many journals, CGF included, apply the rule by which
adding 30% new material and addressing any major issues that had precluded
journal publication would qualify the revised paper for consideration in the
journal. The authors should indicate the nature of the submission in a cover
letter.
In addition, the EGSR papers committee and CGF editors may, at their
discretion, invite select papers from the Experimental Ideas &
Implementations track to a fast-track second review cycle in Computer
Graphics Forum.
Q: Why would I submit to both tracks?
A: Should the committee decide your paper is not, in the form it was
submitted, suitable for the CGF track, it will then be forwarded to the
Experimental Ideas & Implementations track. You, the author, get a paper,
valuable feedback, visibility for your ideas, and the possibility of later
extending your work into a journal paper if the work is accepted in this
second track.
However, if you feel your contribution clearly falls within the scope of the
Experimental Ideas & Implementations track but not the CGF track, please
only submit to the former. This makes the job of the reviewers and the
committee easier, which is of particular importance because the review
schedule is tight.
Q: What if my paper includes interesting system and implementation details
but less algorithmic or mathematical novelty?
A: We would love to consider your work for the Experimental Ideas &
Implementations track!
Q: I have an intriguing idea but I am not certain if it only works in a
certain special cases.
A: We would love to consider your paper for the Experimental Ideas &
Implementations track!
Q: Are Experimental Ideas & Implementations papers presented in separate
sessions?
A: No. In the spirit of promoting new and stimulating ideas, all papers will
be presented alongside in sessions that fit their topic.
[ Apologies for cross-posting. ]
