Two Assoc./Asst. Professors in Computer Graphics & Visualization at TU Delft The Computer Graphics and Visualization Group (graphics.tudelft.nl) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is looking for two new professors. Job description The Assistant/Associate Professor will carry out research in one of the following areas: . Geometry processing, modelling, geometric analysis, or computational geometry . EuroRV3: EuroVis Workshop on Reproducibility, Verification, and Validation in Visualization - in conjunction with EuroVis 2013 <http://www.eurorvvv.org/> http://www.eurorvvv.org/ *** Call for Papers *** The EuroRV3: EuroVis Workshop on Reproducibility, Verification, and Validation in Visualization focuses on the need for reliable visualization. We concentrate on recent and future developments related to the reproducibility of newly-developed visualization approaches, the verification of visualization and data-processing systems, the validation of visualization paradigms, and the effective incorporation of each of these into modern visualizations. Reliable reproducibility is a given in the more mature sciences such as physics, chemistry, and biology etc. and is a requirement if visualization is to evolve into a mature science. Displaying and analyzing data is of ever-increasing importance in almost all research disciplines. Consequently, the field of visualization is constantly growing and reliable visualizations are of more and more importance for domain experts to gain authentic insights. This progress comes along with a steady growth in diversity and complexity of visualization methods, making judgment of the reliability difficult. This workshop solicits short papers and panel statements that address the core questions of the field of reliability in visualization. This includes - the reproducibility of newly developed visualization approaches - the verification of visualization and data-processing systems - the validation of the used visualization paradigms - the incorporation of such uncertainty aspects into visualizations In addition to the above topics, this year's workshop invites short papers (4 pages) and panel proposals (2 pages) with a special focus on Human-Centered Visualization and Verification. Topics include: - The role of the user in the verification and validation of visualization - Reliability of the human visual system - Limitations challenges associated with the human visual system - Verification that is most effective/objective from a human-centered point of view - Information overload - Intuitive interactions - Human-centered evaluation of visualizations - Cognition - Symbolization and abstraction - Theoretical vs. practically effective validation, verification, and visualization. All accepted papers will be published in electronic proceedings. A selection of the best short papers will be invited to extend their papers and submit to a special issue of Computing and Visualization in Science. Panel proposals describe the topic to be addressed and identify the prospective panelists. Dear Colleagues, the Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology (KoRS-CB) and the Computer and Information Science (CS) department at the University of Konstanz in Germany offer a PhD position in the area of information visualization for biology. We are searching for excellent candidates either in bioinformatics or in computer science with knowledge relevant to (biological) data visualization. In the project we will develop new data-analysis and visualization methods for high-throughput screening in Chemical Biology. Hit selection and sub-structure determination through clustering will be optimized with regards to chemical relevance. Results will be visualized by different parallel views that allow coherent interaction. An important aspect in visualization will be to reduce the cognitive load of the viewer. Max Planck Institute for Informatics The Max Planck Institute for Informatics, as the coordinator of the Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communication (MPC-VCC), invites applications for Junior Research Groups Leaders in the Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communication The Max Planck Center for Visual Computing and Communications offers young scientists in information technology the opportunity to develop their own research program addressing - important problems in areas such as - image communication - computer graphics - geometric computing - imaging systems - computer vision - human machine interface - distributed multimedia architectures - multimedia networking - visual media security The center includes an outstanding group of faculty members at Stanford's Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Departments, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, and Saarland University. The program begins with a preparatory 1-2 year postdoc phase (Phase P) at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, followed by a two-year appointment at Stanford University (Phase I) as a visiting assistant professor, and then a position at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics as a junior research group leader (Phase II). However, the program can be entered flexibly at each phase, commensurate with the experience of the applicant. Applicants to the program must have completed an outstanding PhD. Exact duration of the preparatory postdoc phase is flexible, but we typically expect this to be about 1-2 years. Applicants who completed their PhD in Germany may enter Phase I of the program directly. Applicants for Phase II are expected to have completed a postdoc stay abroad and must have demonstrated their outstanding research potential and ability to successfully lead a research group. The main goal of the project is to advance visualization technology that communicates complex biological processes and machineries in an understandable way, conveyed along the lines of traditional craft of illustration and 3D animation. The central research question is: "How can a complex system of processes be visually communicated to a human in a clear and intuitive way?". We base our investigation on data available nowadays in computational biology, as this scientific discipline generates data that matches very well with the central goal of the project. At the same time, 3D data have become very common in various domains such as computer vision, computational geometry, molecular biology and medicine. The rapid evolution in graphics hardware and software, in particular the availability of low cost 3D scanners and modeling tools, has greatly facilitated 3D model acquisition, creation, and manipulation, giving the opportunity to a large user community to experience applications using 3D models. As the number of 3D models is growing rapidly, the problem of creating new 3D models has shifted to the problem of searching for existing 3D models. Thereupon, the development of efficient search mechanisms is required for the effective retrieval of 3D objects from large repositories. The aim of the 3DOR Workshop series is to stimulate researchers from different fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine Learning and Human-Computer Interaction who work on the common goal of 3D object retrieval, to present state-of-the-art work in the field. This provides a cross-fertilization ground that stimulates discussions on the next steps in this important research area. The 6th Eurographics Workshop on 3D Object Retrieval (3DOR 2013) is a co-event of the 34th Annual Conference of the European Association for Computer Graphics (Eurographics 2013). The workshop will take place on May 11, 2013 in Girona, Spain. Submissions are invited in the form of full papers (up to 8 pages) and short papers presented in a poster session (up to 4 pages). Deadline for the EG Medical Prize approaching 26th of November 2012 DIRK BARTZ PRIZE FOR VISUAL COMPUTING IN MEDICINE 2013 (EUROGRAPHICS MEDICAL PRIZE) Submission Deadline: 26 November 2012 Notification: 16 January 2013 The Eurographics Association organizes a biannual competition to acknowledge the contribution that computer graphics is playing in the medical field, and to encourage further development. In 2010 the Eurographics Medical Prize was renamed to honor Dirk Bartz who passed away far too early in March 2010. Dirk Bartz was a highly recognized and enthusiastic scientist, teacher and promoter of Visual Computing in Medicine. Dirk Bartz was an active member of the Eurographics Association and Chair of the EG Medical Prize 2007 and 2009. CALL Submissions for the Dirk Bartz Prize for Visual Computing in Medicine 2013 are now being invited from researchers and developers who can demonstrate that a particular benefit has resulted from the use of computer graphics technology in a medical application that they have produced. Examples of entries could include the use of new data visualization techniques, interaction methods, or virtual/augmented environments. Instructions for submission can be found at https://srm.eg.org/SRM_EG2013MED WINNERS The top three winning entries of the Dirk Bartz Prize for Visual Computing in Medicine 2013 will receive a prize and their submission will be published in the “Short and Areas Papers and Medical Prize Awards” proceedings. Computationally demanding disciplines such as realistic 3D computer graphics and high-performance scientific visualization are strongly affected by this trend and require novel efficient parallel graphics and visualization solutions. All papers should have a direct relation to some aspect of parallelism in graphics or visualization such as multi-core computing, GPU rendering/computing, distributed systems, clusters or grid environments.   The aim of this symposium is to strongly encourage the exchange of experiences and knowledge in novel solutions exploiting and defining new trends in parallel graphics and visualization techniques, including parallel hardware architecture, software tools, and applications. Project description This PhD position is part of the FP7 EU-STREP project "DR THERAPAT"- Digital Radiation Therapy Patient". This project is based on the past decade advances in radiation therapy technology, offering exceptional flexibility in dose delivery. Image guidance during treatment ensures a reliable targeting of the dose to the tumor. This has created the possibility to irradiate the tumor with a high dose with minimal exposure of surrounding tissue. Thus an improvement in tumor control is no longer invariably associated with an increase in radiation-induced toxicity. Now, the capacity exists to create treatment plans that are tailored to the specific characteristics of the patient. However, an individualized representational model that informs on radiation therapy planning and outcome prediction is still lacking. There are several modeling approaches available that have the potential to fill this gap, among them empirical, but established radiobiological models and more sophisticated multi-scale models. DR THERAPAT aim is to create the Digital Radiation Therapy Patient, integrating the available knowledge on tumor imaging, image analysis and interpretation, radiobiological models and radiation therapy planning into a reusable, multi-scale digital representation. The PhD appointed to this position will work in the visualization of the multimodal and multi-value data that plays a role throughout the complete model-based radiotherapy planning pipeline. Prior to the radiotherapy modeling, different imaging modalities will be combined by means of image registration, relevant anatomical structures will be segmented, multiple parameters will be quantified and different tissues will be classified. The resulting multitude of information is the input for the patient-specific radiotherapy modeling. We aim at methods for the visualization and exploration of all relevant information in the radiotherapy planning pipeline; we especially focus on methods that incorporate the uncertainty that is introduced in each step in the pipeline. The goal is to achieve an easy-to-use and easy-to-understand visualization and exploration of the multimodal, multi-value data involved in cancer radiotherapy planning - including the uncertainty in these data - in each step of the radiotherapy planning pipeline and in the final planning outcome. Research group The "DR THERAPAT" project comprises multiple and diverse scientific and technical challenges. Therefore, the project will be developed by a multidisciplinary team from leading academic and research institutions worldwide. The PhD student will be embedded in this team formed by Philips Research (Hamburg) and Healthcare (The Netherlands), Stichting Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Ziekenhuis (The Netherlands), Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium), Aarhus Universitet (Denmark), The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (Greece) and Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e - The Netherlands) where the PhD student will be located. CFP: EuroVis 2013

Call for Papers With this call for papers, we invite the active participation in EuroVis 2013 with the presentation of high-quality visualization research. EuroVis 2013 will be held in Leipzig, Germany, June 17-21, 2013. EuroVis 2013 is the 15th annual scientific gathering on visualization jointly organized by the Eurographics Working Group on Data Visualization and the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee. Based on the continued growth and success of the event, EuroVis will be a conference for the second time. Papers accepted for EuroVis 2013 are published in a special issue of Computer Graphics Forum, the International Journal of the Eurographics Association, after a two-stage peer-reviewing process. Submissions should be 9 pages (at most), excluding references, and 10 pages (at most), in total. For papers that have previously been reviewed for other venues and have been rejected or withdrawn, the authors can provide a cover letter describing the changes they have made to comply with reviewers' comments and requests. This procedure is strongly recommended and it is meant to improve the efficiency of the reviewing process but does not imply reviewer continuity. The cover letter has to be submitted as an 'Additional Material'. Following the success of the short paper track introduced last year, we will continue with this format. Short papers will be electronically archived fully citable publications limited to 4 pages plus one page of references and will receive oral presentations at the conference. The purpose of this track is to promote, in addition to other research, late-breaking results, technical contributions, and work in progress. The UCL VEIV is the EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre in Virtual Environments, Imaging and Visualisation. VEIV projects advance the science and engineering of computational capture, rendering and simulation in a diverse range of applications. VEIV runs an engineering doctorate (equivalent to a PhD), through which research engineers (REs) are fully co-funded to devise solutions relating to visualisation and imaging in engineering and design. The EngD is four years in duration and includes an intensive MRes taught course in the first year, with optional technical and business training at a high level in subsequent years. The EngD is targeted at outstanding students and engineers who want to direct research in industry, or want to maintain significant links with industry in an academic career. DIRK BARTZ PRIZE FOR VISUAL COMPUTING IN MEDICINE 2013 (EUROGRAPHICS MEDICAL PRIZE) Submission Deadline: 26 November 2012 Notification: 16 January 2013 The Eurographics Association organizes a biannual competition to acknowledge the contribution that computer graphics is playing in the medical field, and to encourage further development. In 2010 the Eurographics Medical Prize was renamed to honor Dirk Bartz who passed away far too early in March 2010. Dirk Bartz was a highly recognized and enthusiastic scientist, teacher and promoter of Visual Computing in Medicine. Dirk Bartz was an active member of the Eurographics Association and Chair of the EG Medical Prize 2007 and 2009. CALL Submissions for the Dirk Bartz Prize for Visual Computing in Medicine 2013 are now being invited from researchers and developers who can demonstrate that a particular benefit has resulted from the use of computer graphics technology in a medical application that they have produced. Examples of entries could include the use of new data visualization techniques, interaction methods, or virtual/augmented environments. The aim of the Eurographics Best PhD Thesis Award is to recognize good thesis work in Europe, to incentivize young researchers, and to offer them the opportunity to publish the state of the art section of their thesis as a STAR in the Computer Graphics Forum Journal. The current nomination term is open, and it will close on November 30th, 2012. Candidates will be PhD Theses defended and mainly conducted in Europe or in countries having a Eurographics Chapter or in EG Organizational Member Institutions. Computers & Graphics Journal Special Edition on High Dynamic Range Imaging CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are invited for a Computers & Graphics journal Special Edition on High Dynamic Range Imaging. This special edition seeks contributions which are based on technical aspects related to the capture, storage, processing and display of High Dynamic Range content. High Dynamic Range (HDR) imagery has enabled the handling of content that supports real world luminance. This has created a step change in imaging technologies which were previously limited to a fixed and reduced dynamic range which was unable to represent real-world lighting. HDR still has challenges to overcome before it can become a fully-fledged commercial technology. It is still not possible to capture HDR data, particularly video, in a straightforward manner; once it is captured the number of storage, compression and streaming algorithms are limited; and the display technology has still not achieved its full potential. The applications for HDR also vary widely, and some aspects such as Image-based Lighting have garnered a lot of support, but other interesting applications are sure to exist and yet to be brought into the limelight. In this CFP we invite researchers and professionals that work with imaging technologies to submit papers that will project HDR forward to meet and overcome the current challenges and limitations.
