PhD studentship in Computer Graphics at MMU
Applications are invited for a 3 year University funded Ph.D. project hosted
in the School of Computing, Mathematics and Digital Technology at Manchester
Metropolitan University.
This interdisciplinary project will expand on recent advances made at MMU
and the Institute for Reproductive Medicine at the University of Warwick in
microscopic embryological data processing and visualization. The aim of the
current research is to develop a more detailed understanding of the
molecular basis of the changing 3D organization of developing. The student
will develop methods for semi-automatic segmentation targeted at 3D
microscopic embryological datasets, with implementation and testing on real
pre-existing datasets. Based on the segmentation results, the student will
then create physically based 3D models of embryo shapes and inner
structures. The segmentation and visualization of the number, shape and size
of blastomeres and nuclei will provide valuable information about the
potential viability of the embryo, and will assist embryologists to
understand the mechanisms of developmental failure.
The student will need to combine skills and interests in computer vision,
GPUs and real-time processing; C/C++ and MATLAB based implementation and
physically based modeling. The student should have a good degree in Computer
Science or a suitable other hard science or engineering subject. Preference
will be given to students with appropriate M.Sc. or equivalent research
experience.
The student will receive EU fees and a stipend of £12,000 per annum. The
studentship should be taken up not later than 01/July/12. The Image and
Sensory Computation research group is a lively research environment, which
currently has 5 academics and 6 other researchers working on a variety of
projects concerning human imaging. For full details and informal
discussions, please contact:

/// EuroVis 2012 - Call for Short Papers
/// <http://www.eurovis.org/> http://www.eurovis.org/
For the first time, EuroVis 2012 features a short paper track. The purpose
of this new track is to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and
follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. Short papers will
be peer-reviewed in a one-stage process by an international program
committee. They will be electronically archived and are fully citeable
publications. Submissions for the short paper track should be 4 pages (at
most), excluding references, and 5 pages (at most), in total. They will be
orally presented at the conference. EuroVis 2012 will be held in Vienna,
Austria, June 5-8, 2012.
Please note that we encourage authors of short papers on visual analytics to
submit to the EuroVA workshop.
Important Dates:
*Short Papers Submission Deadline*: March 2, 2012
Acceptance Notification: April 11, 2012
Camera-ready Deadline: April 25, 2012
Conference Dates: June 5-8, 2012
A EuroVis short paper describes a more focused and concise research
contribution and is likely to have a smaller -- yet still significant --
scope of contribution than a full paper. Short papers draw from the same
paper types as full papers, as well as the same list of suggested topics.
The following descriptive examples, which are characterized in contrast to
full papers, may be helpful in understanding what kinds of submissions may
be suitable for short papers:
* A new visualization technique or system and evidence of
its utility compared to known techniques or systems
(described in sufficient detail to assist an expert reader
in replicating the technique or system, but without
exhaustive implementation detail and evaluation).
* An incremental improvement or variation of an existing
visualization technique or system with convincing
evaluation.
* An extensive evaluation of an existing visualization
technique or system.
* A well-proven counter-example to an existing
visualization technique that helps to understand
limitations.
* A new implementation approach that has demonstrably
addressed a significant technical issue
(without extensive evaluation of the implementation).
* A new methodology for designing or studying visualization
systems that has demonstrable benefits for the EuroVis
community (without extensive evaluation of the
methodology).
All submissions must be original works that have not been published
previously in any conference proceedings, magazine, journal, or edited book.
Further details about paper types and suggested topics can be found at:

which may be of interest to the general community but which are still
too speculative, too incomplete or not of sufficient extent to warrant
a full paper. Accepted posters will be published in a Posters
Proceedings of the conference and will be included in the digital
media. Posters will also be displayed during the conference and will
form the focus of a posters session to be run in conjunction with one
of the social events. We encourage submissions from all areas related
to computer graphics, such as rendering, modeling, visualization,
animation, simulation, virtual reality, computer vision, and imaging.
Submitted posters should be in the form of a two page paper which must
be formatted according to the Eurographics Author's guidelines. and
may be accompanied by a preliminary version of the actual poster if
the authors wish it. Anonymous submissions will be made electronically
through the Eurographics Submission and Review Management (SRM) system
(https://srm.eg.org). Poster submissions will be subject to review and
acceptance will be notified in time for submission of a final version
for inclusion of both the two page paper and an A4 version of the final
poster to be included in the poster proceedings and on the conference
digital media.
** The best poster will be selected by an international jury and
** the prize of Springer books to the value of 250 Euro will
** be presented during the Award session on Friday, May 18th, 2012.

NPAR 2012 — Call For Papers
Submission deadline March 14, 2012
We invite you to submit your work to NPAR 2012, the 10th international symposium dedicated to non-photorealistic animation and rendering, sponsored by ACM SIGGRAPH and in cooperation with Eurographics.
Non-Photorealistic Animation and Rendering (NPAR) refers to computational techniques for visual communication. Such techniques usually generate imagery and motion which is expressive, rather than photorealistic, although they may incorporate realistic elements.
NPAR 2012 is part of Expressive 2012, a joint symposium that combines NPAR with Computational Aesthetics (CAe) and Sketch-Based Interfaces and Modelling (SBIM). It will be co-located with the Annecy Film Festival and will take place in Annecy, France, June 4-6, 2012. A single registration for Expressive 2012 will include all three symposia. The Expressive 2012 web site can be found at http://cae-sbim-npar-2012.inrialpes.fr/. Because accommodations during the Annecy Film Festival are at a premium, we strongly urge those submitting work to reserve a room through the festival web site at the time of submission, and then cancel their reservations should they decide not to attend.
We invite researchers, artists, and practitioners of all areas connected to non-photorealistic animation and rendering to submit papers and posters on their work. Submitted papers should be self-classified into one of the following three categories:
• Research: new algorithms, scientific studies, analysis, or data (i.e., traditional NPAR papers) These must contain novel results that make a substantitive contribution to the field.
• Production: candid discussion of the process of creating a work (e.g., film, image, game) or art tool (e.g., paint or CAD program, software library).
• Meta: statements about research that do not contain new results, e.g.: grand challenges, position papers, evaluation standards, surveys, and primers on art / aesthetics / psychophysics for a computer science audience.
All work must be previously unpublished and contain a novel contribution. Production and Meta papers need not contain original research or results.
Topic areas of the conference include but are not limited to:
• Expressive character animation and physics
• Abstraction and stylization of images/video
• Interaction techniques
• Accounts of real productions (e.g., animated films)
• NPAR in real software products (e.g., modeling, visualization, presentation software)
• Visual composition
• Hardware acceleration
• Evaluation methods for NPAR algorithms
• Psychophysics of NPAR
• Rendering and layout for text and presentation graphics
• Quantitative analysis of human artists
• Generative or evolutionary approaches
• Style transfer
• Temporal and spatial coherence
• Adapting classic CG effects like motion blur, depth of field, and lighting for NPAR
• Simulation of natural media and traditional styles
• Non-traditional camera models
• Position papers on grand challenges
There is no absolute maximum length for paper submissions; please use the Siggraph length guidelines, found here: http://s2012.siggraph.org/submitters/technical-papers/publication-requireme…. In particular, note that papers longer than 8-10 pages must make a very significant contribution to be accepted. Papers should follow the ACM SIGGRAPH-sponsored conference formatting instructions (http://www.siggraph.org/publications/instructions), including a title page with an abstract and keywords, and a bibliography. The submission is electronic in PDF format; supplemental video and images may also be submitted. Research papers are reviewed double-blind and so must be anonymous when submitted. Meta and Production papers are reviewed single-blind and the author’s reputation and institution are a factor that reviewers may consider. Information on the submission process will be available on our website.
The authors of the best papers will be invited to submit extended versions to a special section in Elsevier’s “Computers and Graphics” journal with a fast-track review process.
Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings by ACM SIGGRAPH and will be available online via the ACM Digital Library. Posters will not be archived. Posters may be submitted in PDF format as either an extended abstract or as a draft of the poster itself. Rejected papers may be considered for the poster track.
Note that although the NPAR, SBIM and CAe symposia are held jointly, the paper submission and review processes are independent.
Important Dates
Papers submission deadline: March 14, 2012

Eurographics Workshop on 3D Object Retrieval 2012
A co-event of Eurographics 2012
May 13, 2012
<http://eg3dor2012.ist.utl.pt/>
# Important dates
Jan 26, 2012: Paper Submission (extended)
Feb 16, 2012: Notification of acceptance

# 3D Object Retrieval Workshop Series
3D object representations have become an integral part of modern computer
graphics applications, such as computer-aided design, game development and
film production. At the same time, 3D data have become very common in
various domains such as computer vision, computational geometry, molecular
biology and medicine.
Indeed, the rapid evolution in graphics hardware and software, in particular
the availability of low cost 3D scanners and modeling tools, has greatly
facilitated 3D model acquisition, creation, and manipulation, giving the
opportunity to a large user community to experience applications using 3D
models. As the number of 3D models is growing rapidly, the problem of
creating new 3D models has shifted to the problem of searching for existing
3D models. Thereupon, the development of efficient search mechanisms is
required for the effective retrieval of 3D objects from large repositories.
The aim of the 3DOR Workshop series is to stimulate researchers from
different fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine
Learning and Human-Computer Interaction who work on the common goal of 3D
object retrieval, to present state-of-the-art work in the field. This will
provide a cross-fertilization ground that will stimulate discussions on the
next steps in this important research area.
The 5th Eurographics Workshop on 3D Object Retrieval (3DOR 2012) is a
co-event of the 33rd Annual Conference of the European Association for
Computer Graphics (Eurographics 2012). The workshop will take place on May
13, 2012 in Cagliari, Italy.
# Call for Papers, Posters and System Demonstrations
Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished research and
practical applications in all areas of 3D Object Retrieval. Submissions are
invited in form of full and short papers, as well as poster and system
presentations. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- 3D object similarity and matching
- 3D object classification, indexing, and mining
- Similarity of non-rigid shapes
- Feature extraction, decomposition, and segmentation
- Multi-level representations for matching and retrieval
- Partial, part-in-whole, and many-to-many matching
- Matching under uncertainty and noise
- Semantics-driven 3D object retrieval and classification
- Sketch-based retrieval
- Query interfaces and search modalities
- Benchmarking issues
- Relevance feedback methods
- Active learning
- Generative/discriminative approaches in 3D object categorization
- Applications in multimedia, CAD, games, biometrics, e-science, e-learning,
medicine, biology, and cultural heritage.
This years workshop will also feature the 7th Shape Retrieval Evaluation
Contest (SHREC2012). A separate call for participation will be issued later
on.
Extended versions of selected papers from the Workshop will appear, after a
further review, in special issues of international journals. Selected papers
from previous workshops appeared in special issues of The Visual Computer
(TVC) journal and the International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV)
published by Springer.
