Dear Colleague,
*INVITED TALKS*
We are very proud to announce that *Professor Dieter W. Fellner, *is doing
an *invited talk* at SIACG2011.
Dieter W. Fellner is professor of Computer Science at TU Darmstadt, Germany,
and director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research
(IGD) at the same location. Previously he has held academic positions at the
Graz University of Technology, Austria, the University of Technology in
Braunschweig, Germany, the University of Bonn, Germany, the Memorial
University of Newfoundland, Canada, and the University of Denver, Colorado.
He is still affiliated with the Graz University of Technology where he
chairs the Institute of Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization he
founded in 2005.
*TUTORIALS*
Two tutorials will be available to the SIACG 2011 participants:
*Introduction to GPU Programming, by Timothy Lanfear, NVIDIA*
CUDA is a general purpose architecture for writing highly parallel
applications. It provides several key abstractions — a hierarchy of thread
blocks, shared memory, and barrier synchronization — for scalable
high-performance parallel computing. Scientists throughout industry and
academia use CUDA to achieve dramatic speedups on production and research
codes. The CUDA architecture supports many languages, programming
environments, and libraries including C/C++, Fortran, OpenCL, DirectCompute,
Python, Matlab, FFT, LAPACK, etc. The course will teach the basics of CUDA C
programming, give an overview of the various tools, and introduce some of
the considerations necessary for obtaining high performance from GPU
applications.
*Geographic Information Systems, by José Rodrigues and Sara Madeira,
University of Algarve*
There is now an increasing demand and use of geographic information with
diverse purposes and application domains. Scientific areas as diverse as the
Geosciences, Engineering, Economics, Sociology and Health, among others,
increasingly use geographic information technologies as a tool for problems
modeling, analysis and simulation scenarios. The fact that the vast majority
of the information is georeferenceable, the spatial elements constitute an
integrator allowing for correlation of different variables (before hardly
comparable) and technological change are some of the aspects that allow us
to understand this interest in science geographic information in general,
and the implementation and exploitation of geographic information systems in
particular.
The implementation and operation of these systems are carried out using
specific software, equipped with functionalities for editing, data analysis
and map production. The main purpose of this tutorial is to show the key
stages and operations in the creation and use of thematic geographic
information systems. The presentation will include a strong practical
component in the computer lab to operate several examples involving
vectorial and raster data.
Best regards,
Mauro Figueiredo

Applications in Computer Graphics, invites you to submit your latest
research results to a *special issue* on “*Mobile Augmented Reality*.”

*MOTIVATION*
Augmented Reality (AR) is technology that seamlessly overlays computer
graphics on the real world. Although first developed over forty years ago,
it has only been in the last few years that AR has become widely available.
One reason for this is the emergence of mobile phones that combine fast CPUs
with large displays, cameras, graphics acceleration, compass and
accelerometers, GPS sensors, and even gyroscopes. For the first time people
have a powerful AR hardware platform in the palm of their hands.
While mobile AR hardware has become commonplace, there is still a need for
more research on how this hardware can be used to deliver a compelling AR
experience. Research is needed in new tools for creating mobile AR
applications, interaction techniques for handheld AR, tracking and rendering
methods, and methods for evaluating the mobile AR experience, among others.
As the field grows rapidly there is an exciting opportunity for academic and
industry researchers to present ideas that can define the future of mobile
AR.
This Computers & Graphics special issue on Mobile Augmented Reality will
encourage a further exchange of knowledge and experience on Mobile Augmented
Reality in a wide range of areas, including:
• Tracking for mobile AR
• Interaction methods in mobile AR
• Mobile AR application case studies
• User evaluation for mobile AR
• Mobile AR rendering and visualization techniques
• Novel input and output devices for mobile AR
• Software architecture
• Theories and frameworks for mobile AR

[Technical Papers]
http://www.siggraph.org/asia2010/content/attendees/technical-papers
SIGGRAPH Asia 2010 Technical Papers presents a premier international forum for new research results in computer graphics and interactive techniques. Leading international experts from Asia and all over the world will present ground-breaking results in peer-reviewed research in fluids and flows, curves, character and crowd animation, sampling and filtering, geometric and volumetric reconstruction, modeling and rendering, computational imaging and video, and imaging hardware.
Technical Paper Highlights:
Video-Based Reconstruction of Animatable Human Characters http://www.siggraph.org/asia2010/content/attendees/techpapers/34
This paper presents a technique for capturing multi-view video of an actor's performance. The captured virtual actor is represented as a skeleton with surface skinning, collision proxies, and a physics-based simulation model for moving cloth.
A Practical Appearance Model for Dynamic Facial Color
http://www.siggraph.org/asia2010/content/attendees/techpapers/25
Human skin changes color as emotional states and types of expression change. This paper presents an appearance model based on real measurements of melanin and hemoglobin, which is efficiently coupled to a geometric facial-animation rig.
Optical Computing for Fast Light Transport Analysis
http://www.siggraph.org/asia2010/content/attendees/techpapers/24
This paper shows how to efficiently perform numerical computations on a scene's unknown transport matrix (eigenvector analysis, low-rank approximation, inversion) by doing them partially in optics with projectors and cameras.
Context-Based Search for Models
http://www.siggraph.org/asia2010/content/attendees/techpapers/28
This paper introduces a context-based search engine that uses information about the supporting scene a user is building to find good models.
