Fourth Eurographics Workshop on Sketch-Based Interfaces and Modeling
(SBIM'07)
http://www.eg.org/sbm
In cooperation with AAAI
With support from Microsoft Research
University of California
Riverside, CA, USA
Thursday August 2 - Friday August 3, 2007
Hands-on Tablet PC workshop: Saturday August 4
Registration is now open for the fourth Eurographics Workshop on
Sketch-Based Interfaces and Modeling (SBIM'07). Please register
through the workshop web site: http://www.eg.org/sbm. Program
and travel information can also be found on this site.
Aims and Scope
-----------------
Most computer user interfaces continue to be based on the keyboard and
mouse. These are good for typing and pointing, but they lack the
naturalness, transparency, and ease-of-use of basic low-tech pencil
and paper. Modern pen computing hardware--in principle--enables fluid
drawing, sketching, and direct manipulation of both text and
graphics. To realize this potential requires effective user interface
designs and underlying algorithms to support them.
This workshop will explore techniques and technologies needed to
enable sketch-based interfaces. The foci will be on methods for
recognition of hand-drawn shapes and interpretation of diagrams and
sketches, and on applications of sketch-based interfaces to a variety
of domains such as 2D/3D graphics, CAD, diagram editing, and
note-taking. Empirical usability studies aimed at clarifying the
nature of sketch-based interfaces and comparing pen input to other
interaction techniques are also welcome.
The workshop is being held in cooperation with Eurographics and AAAI
and sponsored in part by Microsoft Research, hence results and
insights will be shared by researchers from around the globe. The
workshop dates of August 2-4 are just prior to SIGGRAPH. The workshop
location is Riverside, California, 1.5 hours by car from the SIGGRAPH
venue in San Diego.
The two-day workshop will include paper presentations (single track),
a breakout session, coffee breaks, a conference dinner, and invited
talks. There will be a demo session in which participants have an
opportunity to try out state of the art pen-based computing demos. All
are welcome to attend the workshop; submission of a paper is not
required for attendance.

INVITED SPEAKER
---------------
JERRY TESSENDORF
Principal Graphics Scientist, Rhythm and Hues Studios, USA
Talk Title: "PHENOMENAL FILM EFFECTS"
ABSTRACT
Visual effects in films today can be highly realistic computer
graphic imagery of natural environments and physical phenomena.
Produced with a very big palette of software tools, the
algorithmic routes to these images are sometimes based on the
underlying physical phenomenology, and sometimes not.
In this talk we consider several effects-heavy scenes in recent
films, looking in detail at the computer graphics software and
algorithms used and what physical and unphysical notions
motivated the choices made.
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Jerry Tessendorf is Principal Graphics Scientist at Rhythm and
Hues Studios, where he builds new graphics tools for visual
effects. The list of films he has contributed fx software to
includes Titanic, The 13th Warrior, Red Planet, The Lion, The
Witch, and the Wardrobe, SuperMan Returns, and Happy Feet.Prior
to working in visual effects, he was a Corporate Senior
Scientist at the research company Arete Associates.
Dr. Tessendorf has a PhD in theoretical physics from Brown
University, and his research includes techniques in dynamical
simulation, ocean optics, and volume rendering.
WORKSHOP AIMS AND SCOPE
-----------------------
Synthesizing realistic natural scenes is a challenging and
important problem in computer graphics. The challenge stems
not only from the complexity and diversity of objects and
natural phenomena interacting together, but also from the
huge amount of small details that should be modeled to obtain
realistic models and physically plausible simulations.
Therefore, there is still a need for interactive modeling and
simulation techniques capable for handling complex synthetic
sceneries. The purpose of this workshop is to explore novel
techniques for modeling, animating, simulating and rendering
complex natural phenomena.
The workshop will build on work done in recent years including
simulating aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant
modeling, ecosystem simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid
flows. It will focus on non-conscious or inanimate nature like
rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows (animals and humans as part
of nature should be excluded). Work in this area, promising as
it is, is still far from complete.
WORKSHOP FORMAT
---------------
The workshop will take place just before the Eurographics 2007
Conference (September 4, Prague, Czech Republic) to encourage
a broad range of participants. As such, it will provide a very
interesting opportunity for researchers that want to attend or
present communications at both events. The workshop will be
held in one day, including paper presentation and invited
sessions. Participation is open to everyone, not requiring
submission of a paper.

VISION, MODELING, AND VISUALIZATION 2007 (VMV2007)
http://www.mpi-inf.mpg.de/vmv2007
November 7-9, 2007
Saarbrücken, Germany
Vision, modeling, and visualization are rapidly converging
disciplines. Often the three fields are treated separately, each with their
own methodology, terminology, and formalism. However, in many applications
they must work hand in hand - evoking cross-fertilization and new research
directions. Prominent examples are image and video-based rendering, 3D-TV,
and medical visualization. Also, due to the proliferation of digital
photography and high-speed graphics accelerators, image-based modeling and
the corresponding vision and visualization techniques have become a
research topic of highest relevance.
The "Vision, Modeling, and Visualization 2007" workshop addresses the
entire spectrum of techniques and applications in this combined field: from
data acquisition over processing to visualization, including perceptional
issues. This workshop is the twelfth in a series of annual meetings
organized by different research centers and groups. After highly successful
meetings at various locations, this year's event will take place in
Saarbrücken. The program will consist of contributed papers and poster
presentations, as well as invited talks by internationally renowned
speakers.

Eurographics Launches the Eurographics 2007 Game Physics Innovation
Competition
===============================================================================
Following in the footsteps of the successful Eurographics 2006 Graphics
meets Games competition, Eurographics is delighted to announce the
Eurographics 2007 Game Physics Innovation competition which aims to showcase
innovation in the use of physics technology in games. Physics has always
played an integral part in the development of computer games, since the very
earliest games like Space War which featured gravitational wells and
inertial movement. More recently physics in games has become mainstream,
with many commercial offerings from companies now pushing the boundaries of
what is possible in top games. This competition aims to focus on what is
next; what new physics techniques might be employed in future games, can
physics help redefine the interface with the user or can entirely new
game-play paradigms emerge when full physics simulations are employed?
The competition, organised by Dr. Steven Collins (founder of Havok and
Graphics Research Group manager, Trinity College Dublin) and Ladislav Kavan
(Czech Technical University in Prague) which forms part of the Game Track in
the forth-coming Eurographics Conference in Prague, September 3-7, 2007,
aims to inspire a sharing of ideas and discoveries relating to physics
innovation, and through the generous sponsorship of Sony Computer
Entertainment US R&D, is offering prizes totalling over EUR 2000 to the
winning entries:
* Overall Prize: EUR 1,500 - awarded to the entry that in the judges opinion
exhibited the best combination of innovation and technical achievement
* Collada Prize: EUR 500 - awarded to the entry that makes the best use of
the Collada standard.
For full details regarding the competition go to
http://www.cgg.cvut.cz/eg07/gpic. The competition closing date is August
24th 2007 with the winners being announced during the Game Track of the
Eurographics Conference in September. Winning entries will be displayed in
the Intel sponsored Game Physics Lobby on the very latest Intel® CoreT 2
Quad processor based systems, and will be available to be played by
conference attendees. The Game Track will also feature keynote presentations
from game industry leaders.

Stéphane Mérillou (FR)
Call for papers
Synthesizing realistic natural scenes is a challenging and important problem
in computer graphics. The challenge stems not only from the complexity and
diversity of objects and natural phenomena interacting together, but also
from the huge amount of small details that should be modeled to obtain
realistic models and physically plausible simulations. Therefore, there is
still a need for interactive modeling and simulation techniques capable for
handling complex synthetic sceneries. The purpose of this workshop is to
explore novel techniques for modeling, animating, simulating and rendering
complex natural phenomena.
The workshop will build on work done in recent years including simulating
aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant modeling, ecosystem
simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid flows. It will focus on
non-concious or inanimate nature like rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows
(animals and humans as part of nature should be excluded). Work in this
area, promising as it is, is still far from complete.
Authors are invited to submit technical papers in these or related areas.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Plant structure modeling
- Ecosystem simulation
- Gaseous phenomena (clouds, fog .)
- Simulating liquid flows
- Modeling fire and smoke
- Aging and weathering
- Terrain modeling

IEEE/EG International Symposium on Volume Graphics
September 3-4, 2007
The Czech Technical University, Prague, Czech Republic
http://vg.swan.ac.uk/vg07/
Volume graphics deals with the analysis, synthesis and presentation of
volumetric objects, both static and time-varying. Specifically, it
includes topics related to the acquisition, reconstruction and
transformation of volume data as well as feature analysis, information
extraction and rendering. Research papers are solicited that present
original and unpublished results concerning all aspects of volume
graphics. We especially invite research contributions that report
computational techniques derived from existing knowledge in numerical
analysis, signal processing and statistical modeling. Furthermore,
papers are solicited which demonstrate the efficacy of the methods of
volume graphics towards enhanced practices or understanding of specific
applications in engineering, medicine and physical and biological
sciences.
This 6th occurrence of Volume Graphics has been changed from a Workshop
to a Symposium and is again co-located with the Symposium on Point-Based
Graphics 2007 as well as with the Eurographics 2007 Conference.
The accepted papers will be published in IEEE/EG sponsored proceedings,
and archived in electronic form in the Eurographics and IEEE online
digital libraries. A selected number of submissions will be further
considered for publication in a major journal in computer graphics and
visualization.

WORKSHOP ON
DYNAMIC 3D IMAGING
IN CONJUNCTION WITH
Symp. of the German Association for Pattern Recognition, DAGM
September 11th, 2007, Heidelberg
GENERAL INFORMATION
http://www.multi-sensorics.de/dyn3d
IMPORTANT DATES
NEW Submission of full papers: June 04th, 2007
Notification of acceptance: July 30th, 2007
Final versions due: August 10th, 2007
Workshop: September 11th, 2007
SCOPE
3D imaging sensors have been investigated for several decades. In recent
years, improvements on classical approaches like stereo vision on the one
hand, and novel techniques like ZCam or Photonic Mixing Device (PMD) on the
other hand have emerged, leading to 3D vision systems with radically
improved
characteristics. Presently, these techniques make full-range 3D data
available
at interactive frame rates, and thus open the path towards a much broader
application of 3D vision systems.
The workshop focuses on sensor systems, data processing approaches and
systems
incorporating interactive, full-range 3D sensors in specific application
areas.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Development of full-range 3D sensors or sensor systems, including
- active and passive 3D imaging systems
- 3D sensors operating at optical, near-infrared, terahertz and
microwave wavelengths
- sensor simulation
* Multi sensor fusion incorporating full-range 3D sensors
* Data processing for dynamic full-range 3D-data, including
- sensor based image synthesis
- calibration techniques
- 3D object recognition
- 3D optical flow
* Applications using interactive, full-range 3D sensors, e.g. in
areas like
- autonomous robotics
- medicine
- industrial automation
Results of practical significance with an adequate inclusion of interactive
3D
vision sensors will be considered. The content of submitted papers has to be
novel.
