CALL-FOR-POSTERS for CGI 2005 Computer Graphics International is pleased to announce its poster program and is soliciting high quality poster proposals. The CGI posters program offers an opportunity to present innovative techniques in commercial products, work in progress, student projects, or non-traditional research. Posters on any subject related to computer graphics (see a topic list below) will be considered. An informal poster session will be held which should allow plenty of opportunities for one-on-one dialogue and small group discussion in a casual setting. Although extended abstracts describing each poster will be distributed at the conference, posters will NOT be included in regular proceedings and are NOT considered publications. The same work can therefore be submitted to journals and conferences later. Poster proposals should present at least partial results achieved with a new technique. Submissions describing unsubstantiated ideas for future research will not be accepted. Based on the results of paper review process, CGI 05 committee has decided to offer several authors to present their work as invited posters and we expect to build a high quality poster program based on these core contributions. Proposals will be evaluated by members of CGI 05 committee based on level of contribution to the field of computer graphics, validity of the results, originality, and clarity of presentation. Submission procedure: Please e-mail a pdf file with an extended abstract (maximum 2 pages formatted according to IEEE guidelines available at http://www.computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm) to cgi_pstr(a)cs.sunysb.edu File name should start with primary author's full last name followed by an underscore and arbitrary poster name, for example samaras_cool_faces.pdf IMPORTANT: Please do NOT use paper submission system for anything related to posters. Even if the CGI 05 committee offered you to present an invited poster based on your earlier paper submission, please send the new 2 page version to the address above by the deadline specified below. This will serve as an indication that you accept our invitation and are willing to present your poster at the conference. Poster presentation: Authors of accepted posters will prepare, print, and bring their own 60 x 40 portrait or landscape posters to the conference. Mounting materials will be provided. Posters will be on display during the conference. A special poster session will be scheduled during which at least one registered author is required to stand by his/her poster. Cyberworlds 2005 Call for Papers

CFP: Eurographics Workshop on Natural Phenomena

Call for Papers Eurographics Workshop on Natural Phenomena http://egwnp.liris.cnrs.fr Dublin, Ireland Aims and Scope Synthesizing realistic natural scenes is a challenging and important problem in computer graphics. The challenge stems not only from the complexity and diversity of objects and natural phenomena interacting together, but also from the huge amount of small details that should be modeled to obtain realistic models and physically plausible simulations. Therefore, there is still a need for interactive modeling and simulation techniques capable for handling complex synthetic sceneries. The purpose of this workshop is to explore novel techniques for modeling, animating, simulating and rendering complex natural phenomena. The workshop will build on work done in recent years including simulating aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant modeling, ecosystem simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid flows. It will focus on non-concious or inanimate nature like rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows (animals and humans as part of nature should be excluded). Work in this area, promising as it is, is still far from complete. Authors are invited to submit technical papers in these or related areas. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Plant structure modeling - Ecosystem simulation - Gaseous phenomena (clouds, fog .) - Simulating liquid flows - Modeling fire and smoke - Aging and weathering - Terrain modeling Submission Procedure (all submissions are electronic) Authors are requested to submit papers, no longer than 10 pages, with the main body set in Eurographics Conference Paper Format. You can download a set of LaTeX style files from http://egwnp.liris.cnrs.fr. Each paper should contain title, authors' names and affiliations, abstract, keywords, text, illustrations and references. Detailed guidelines are available through the Workshop Site. We will accept papers in PDF format only. It thus provides important support for researchers who are faced increasingly with the necessity of adopting a multidisciplinary approach to address the problems faced in pushing forward the boundaries of modern medicine. Papers are invited that address information visualisation, from the microscopic to the macroscopic level, in biomedical, biomechanical and other related fields. These include: · quantitative imaging and measurement of biomedical structures · animation, simulation and predictive modelling · interaction, deformation, growth and evolution of biomedical structures · models, including physico-scientific, particles, implicit surfaces, finite elements, etc. · multi-modality visualisation, searching, characterisation and comparison of complex structures · surface, volume, dynamic and sensory data reduction, mapping and user representation · display and interaction technologies, including VR, augmentation, stereoscopic, haptics, etc. · image & computer applications, including screening, diagnostics, surgery & cancer therapy · human interfacing, virtual image projection, retinal projection, tactile and sound stimuli etc. · virtual and augmented reality · emerging technologies. The Proceedings will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. The theme for this year's conference is "Multidimensional Bio-Medical Structure Sensing, Modelling, Simulation and Visualisation". Of particular interest is the capture and early processing of natural data to be used as input for external and internal biomedical structure definition. Papers are encouraged which demonstrate the measurement and modelling of the dynamics of biomedical data and structures; these may range from the microscopic, cellular level to the macroscopic organ or whole-patient level. These structures often undergo constrained interactions which need to be measured and realistically simulated in order to understand the fundamental processes, to facilitate the development of bio-medical products or to enable advances in critical bio-medical applications such as life-saving patient treatment. At the microscopic level, examples are the exciting developments that now visibly link nuclear and cytoplasmic structural changes in cells to drug and radiation therapies in cancer. At the macroscopic scale, examples are the characterisation, simulation and prediction of internal and external body movements for robot assisted (radio)surgery, intensity modulated and image guided (radio)therapy, and the emerging modality of ion-beam therapy. Quality of life, encompassing recovery patterns and rehabilitation following treatment is an important, but often neglected theme. In this age of evidence-based medicine, how do we objectively define and visualise recovery patterns following treatments that impact on patient mobility, hearing, speech and vision. Hence, papers addressing the evolution of new biomedical and clinical tools and their likely impact are especially welcome. For a long time, Vision and Visualization were separate fields, with their own methodology, terminology, and models. However, for many applications vision and visualization have to work hand in hand based on models that can be used in both disciplines. Prominent examples are medical sciences, where novel and improved image sensors require new integrated vision, modeling, and visualization techniques. Also, due to the proliferation of digital photography and high speed graphics accelerators, image-based modeling and the corresponding vision and visualization techniques became a research topic of highest relevancy. The DFG Graduate Research Center SFB 603 "Model-based Analysis and Visualization of Complex Scenes and Sensor Data" at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is focused on this research area since 1998. The workshop "Vision, Modeling, and Visualization 2005" is the tenth in a series of annual meetings organized by this Research Center. After successful meetings in Erlangen, Alpbach, Saarbrücken, Stuttgart, Munich, and Stanford, the 2005 workshop returns to Erlangen. The program will consist of contributed paper and poster presentations, as well as invited talks by internationally renowned speakers. Call for Papers Special Issue of the Elsevier Journal "Computers & Graphics" on: Natural Phenomena Simulation Submission Deadline: September 30th, 2005 Journal URL: http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/cag Since the beginning of computer graphics, researchers have been attracted to visually reproduce Nature's beauty and complexity present in a myriad of phenomena, from a small water droplet to a space nebula. During this time, different approaches have been taken to simulate such phenomena. Researchers working on entertainment applications, for example, usually emphasize the believable visual representation of natural phenomena, while researchers working on scientific applications usually focus their efforts on the accuracy of the models representing the underlying natural processes. Ideally, we would like to be able to create realistic displays of natural phenomena using accurate models in a reasonable time. Such a goal highlights one the most important research challenges facing the computer graphics community today, namely the predictive simulation of natural phenomena, involving both the light interaction with matter and the dynamics of natural systems. Predictive simulations make the image synthesis process more intuitive and have a broader scope of applications, including not only believable picture making, but also scientific and medical visualization. The key issue in this context, however, consists in establishing the predictability of the models. It is not a trivial task since computer models are intrinsically less predictable than physical phenomena. Currently, two guidelines are used in the development of predictive simulations of natural phenomena. First, the models are designed to be controlled by biophysically meaningful parameters. Second, their evaluation involves comparisons of modeled results with actual measured data or the real phenomenon. In this special issue, we welcome contributions describing original research work on natural phenomena simulation, preferably taking into account the predictability guidelines outlined above. Furthermore, due to the multidisciplinary nature of this theme, special attention will be given to papers that are supported by reliable scientific data from fields including, but not limited to, oceanography, remote sensing physics, chemistry, biology and medicine, and which can also provide evidence of practical contributions to these fields. This understanding arises through the integration of fields such as art, design, and the social, cognitive, and perceptual sciences. Insights are realised in the form of novel methods for producing and interacting with rich graphical displays often utilising established techniques from computer graphics, artificial intelligence, and computer science in general. Such interfaces present content that: (1) engages the user and is esthetically satisfying; (2) participates in human cognition as external or distributed representations; (3) is sensitive to the real-time demands of the interaction in the context of the available computational resources; and (4) adapts the form of the output according to a wider set of constraints such as an individual's perceptual, attentive, and motor abilities and the nature of the presentation media and available interaction devices. The 5th International Symposium on Smart Graphics will bring together researchers from computer graphics, vizualisation, graphics design, cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence, all working on different aspects of computer-generated graphics. This year's meeting will be held in the beautiful Frauenwörth Cloister near Munich, Germany. This year SG05 particularly encourages submission in the area of visual analytics -- the art and science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Visual analytic interfaces are based on cognitive and perceptual principles to support human information discourse using innovative interactive techniques and visual representations. These are augmented by the art of graphical design and interaction design and the use of Artificial Intelligence in partnership with biological intelligence. Testing these applications will require new methodologies that move beyond usability to quantify the impact of interactive visualization applications on perceptual, distributed, and embodied cognition. The conference will be hosted by the Center for Visual Computing (CVC) and Computer Science Department, Stony Brook University. Close by the historic village of Stony Brook at the geographic midpoint of New York's Long Island, the University campus lies about 60 miles east of Manhattan. It is only a short distance to the beaches at Fire Island, the elegant resorts of the Hamptons, and the vineyards of the East End. The internationally recognized research facilities of Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are nearby. Manuscripts must be written in English. The first part of the paper should include a title, an abstract, keywords, and author's information (name, title, affiliation, address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address).
