3D Microstructure Meeting
Saarbrücken, Germany, November 2nd - 4th, 2011
Across the different disciplines 3D microstructures are an exciting field of
research. Materials scientists provide new insights to understand the
formation of microstructures as well as its consequences for properties,
which might create challenging theoretical problems for natural scientists
but also computer scientists and mathematicians. Equally many of the recent
advances in computer science and mathematics as well as natural sciences
have found useful application in materials science and engineering.
This meeting includes the activities of the workshop "3D Imaging, Analysis,
Modelling and Simulation of Macroscopic Properties" organized by Fraunhofer
ITWM (Katja Schladitz), Institut Carnot Ecole des Mines (Dominique Jeulin)
and TU Kaiserslautern (Claudia Redenbach).

Topics
This symposium promotes discussions and the free exchange of ideas at the
research frontiers of 3D imaging and analysis of microstructures from the
different scientific perspectives. It should provide a valuable means of
disseminating information and ideas in a way that cannot be achieved through
the usual presentations at traditional meetings.
It is addressed to material scientists, engineers, natural scientists,
computer scientists and mathematicians, who want to share their ideas and
experiences and discuss related topics from different perspectives. The
symposium will cover areas like
Sampling and Data Acquisition
Visualization
Image Processing and Analysis
Geometric Models for Microstructures
Simulation of Macroscopic Properties
Tomographic Methods and Application in Materials Science

3DIMPVT 2011: Call for Participation in 3D Urban Data Challenge New Extended
Deadline: Feb 28th 2011
Chair: Ioannis Stamos (The City College of New York)
<http://www.3dimpvt.org/challenge.php> http://www.3dimpvt.org/challenge.php
Laser range scanners have now the ability to acquire millions of 3D points
of highly detailed and geometrically complex urban sites, opening new
avenues of exploration in modeling urban environments. The 3D Urban Data
Challenge, in connection with 3DIMPVT 2011 ( <http://www.3dimpvt.org/>
http://www.3dimpvt.org/), is seeking to attract novel algorithms for
processing large point clouds in the city-level.
We will make available two sets of data. The first (NYC) is acquired by
Leica ScanStation2. It contains a number of accurate range scans in New York
City. The second (LEX) is acquired by a mobile laser range scanner. It
includes color + 3D geometry of a downtown strip. Different from the NYC
data set, it includes scans from different times of days. This 4D datasets
offer more redundant data that may make some processing tasks easier.
We are soliciting solutions in the automated detection and classification of
objects of interest or other creative algorithms that use the available
datasets. An example problem to tackle is the detection of window features
that are prominent in urban scenes, as well as cars on street level, major
facades of buildings, balconies, vegetation, street signs, etc. Solutions
that explore and detect regularities in urban scenes are of great interest
as well. Other creative algorithms for solving problems not mentioned in
this document will also be considered.
The contributed solutions will be evaluated by a panel of researchers in the
area of range image processing, and the best ideas will be presented at a
conference session. A summary paper will be included in the MVA journal
special issue for 3DIMPVT 2011.
Interested party should send an email to the challenge chair (Ioannis
Stamos, <mailto:istamos@hunter.cuny.edu> istamos(a)hunter.cuny.edu) to
request data access.
The deadline for submission of results is February 28th, 2011. Each
submission should include a short description about what has been achieved
with the data set.

*** EGPGV 2011 - Gentle Reminder: Paper Deadline January 21, 2011 (Abstracts
due January 15) ***
Welcome to the 11th EGPGV, the Eurographics Symposium on Parallel Graphics
and Visualization. The event will take place on April 10 - 11 in Llandudno
Wales, at Venue Cymru. The Symposium will be held in cooperation with ACM
SIGGRAPH and in conjunction with Eurographics 2011.
EGPGV is the premier international event focusing on parallel graphics and
visualization technology, where novel solutions exploiting and defining new
trends in parallel hardware and software architectures are presented. The
aim of the symposium is to strongly encourage exchange of experiences and
knowledge in parallel and distributed visual computing and its application
to all aspects of computer graphics and data visualization.
All papers should have a direct relation to some aspect of parallelism in
graphics or visualization such as multi-core computing, multi-pipe GPU
rendering/computing, distributed systems, clusters or grid environments. For
more information, please refer to the symposium website
<http://www.egpgv.org/egpgv2011> http://www.egpgv.org/egpgv2011.
The proceedings of the Symposium will be published in the Eurographics
Proceedings Series and on the Eurographics Digital Library. Note that the
authors of up to three of the best papers from the EGPGV Symposium will be
invited to submit extended journal versions to IEEE Transactions on
Visualization and Computer Graphics.
