|| EuroVis 2011: Call for Posters & Demos
-++----------------------------------------------------------------------
|| Poster Chair: Július Parulek ( <mailto:Julius.Parulek@UiB.no>
Julius.Parulek(a)UiB.no)
|| Submissions are due March 11, 2011
|| Notification date is April 4, 2011
|
-+ With this call for posters & demos,
| we invite the active participation in EuroVis 2011
| (June 1-3, 2011, in Bergen, Norway)
| with a poster and/or an interactive demo.
-+ EuroVis 2011,
| i.e., the Eurographics / IEEE Symposium on Visualization,
| is annually organized
| by the Eurographics Working Group on Data Visualization
| and the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee.
| General URL: <http://www.EuroVis.org/> http://www.EuroVis.org/
-+ EuroVis 2011 Posters and Demos will be exhibited at the EuroVis
| 2011 venue. In the poster/demo session, the presenters are
| supposed to discuss their work with interested EuroVis attendees.
| Additionally, there will be a preview session, where presenters
| will have 60 seconds each to advertise their poster/demo to the
| overall EuroVis audience. For the case of interactive demos,
| we recommend to submit them together with an accompanying poster.
-+ We welcome preliminary findings, which, for example, are not yet
| mature enough for a full paper, interesting research work with a
| contribution smaller than in a typical research paper (student
| projects can fall into this category, for example), or late-
| breaking research where the presenter can benefit from the feedback
| from the community before writing a full paper. There is no
| explicit requirement of novelty with respect to the involved
| research. For instance, we welcome the demonstration of
| open-source visualization software, even if its research aspects
| have already been published in another venue, the presentation of
| commercial visualization software, or of videos showing
| visualization systems in action. Although a full literature review
| is not expected, the most relevant previous work should be cited,
| particularly if new research results are presented.
-+ The collection of accepted abstracts will be distributed to the
| attendees of EuroVis 2011 (xeroxed, black and white only). Still
| they will not be included in the archival proceedings or indexed in
| a digital library. Thus, posters do not preclude the later
| submission of work as a full research paper at EuroVis 2012 or any
| other venue.
-+ Each poster/demo abstract will be read and evaluated by the Poster
| Chair of EuroVis 2011 (in collaboration with the other EuroVis 2011
| Chairs). The submissions will be evaluated based on whether the
| content is suitable for EuroVis and that it is not a repetition of
| the work of others. The authors of posters that are not accepted
| will receive a summary review of their poster from the chair(s)
| explaining the decision and providing feedback.
-+ Suggested topics for posters/demos include (but are not limited to):
* Visualization Taxonomies and Models
* Spatial Data in Visualization
* Non-Spatial Data
* Large Data Visualization
* Visualization Techniques
* Visual Analytics, Visual Data Mining, and Knowledge Discovery
* Interaction
* General Topics
* Evaluation and User Studies

| please note the following:
| -- Poster abstract submissions should be in two-column format
| and should be one page in length (in exceptional cases, two
| pages could be acceptable). The author(s) should prepare
| and electronically submit a PDF version of their poster/demo
| abstract following the EuroVis style guidelines, see
| <http://www.UiB.no/EuroVis2011/format.php>

* CALL FOR PAPERS *
*******************
Overview
********
Advances in computer graphics have made visual media the heart of the user
interface, and it is clear that graphics will continue to play a dominant
role in knowledge work, entertainment, and the home. Indeed, as computers
become more and more pervasive, as display sizes both increase and decrease,
and as novel surface computing applications are conceived, new and
challenging problems arise for the effective use, generation, and
interpretation of computer graphics.
The International Symposium on Smart Graphics will bring together
researchers from Computer Graphics, Visualization, Graphic Art & Graphic
Design, Cognitive Psychology and Artificial Intelligence, all working on
different aspects of computer-mediated, computer-generated, or
computer-interpreted graphics---and the user experiences they enable. This
year's meeting will be held in Bremen, Germany.
Smart Graphics
**************
Graphics become "Smart Graphics" when:
* Their design incorporates (and sometimes informs) a deeper understanding
of human perception, cognition, and action in the form of design practice
and/or cognitive science.
* Artificial intelligence drives the creation and interaction with graphics,
often incorporating principles from graphic design and the cognitive science
of visual representations.
* Graphics are designed to effectively support human cognition,
communication, and collaboration, for example in the new field of visual
analytics.
Scope
*****
Smart Graphics is grounded in a deep understanding of human abilities,
activities, and desires. This understanding arises through the integration
of fields such as art, design, and the social, cognitive, and perceptual
sciences.
Insights are realized in the form of novel methods for producing and
interacting with rich graphical displays---often utilizing established
techniques from Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer
Science in general.
Such interfaces present content that
* engages the user and is aesthetically satisfying,
* participates in human cognition as external or distributed
representations, is sensitive to the real-time demands of the interaction in
the context of the available computational resources, and
* adapts the form of the output according to a wider set of constraints such
as an individual's perceptual, attentive, and motor abilities and the nature
of the presentation media and available interaction devices.
Smart Graphics research can be loosely divided into principles, methods and
systems based research, and the symposium will encourage submissions in all
these areas, based on the following characterization:
* Principles: Principles of Smart Graphics include: theories of graphics
design and visual aesthetics, and theories of graphical representations and
interaction, design and testing of graphical systems, constraints on
technological, computational and human (perceptual, cognitive and motor)
resources, conceptualizations of graphics and interactive systems,
representation and reasoning requirements for Smart Graphics, interaction
between resource restrictions, design, requirements capture and evaluation
methodologies, systems that make people smart.
* Methods: New approaches to the design and testing of graphical generation,
presentation and interaction for both conventional desk-top systems and new
devices and media, acquisition and representation of design knowledge for
Smart Graphics generation, empirical methods in the characterization of
interaction, dealing with heterogeneous target media, application of
planning, decision theory, optimization, constraint satisfaction, machine
learning and other AI techniques to Smart Graphics, attentive systems,
evaluation methods.
* Systems: The application of Smart Graphics to visualization, virtual
reality, augmented reality, mobile communications, wearable computing,
graphical hypermedia, web-based systems, novel interaction techniques (e.g.
attentive systems, haptic and natural language interaction), and advisory &
tutoring systems.
SG '11 welcomes submissions from computer graphics, HCI & AI researchers and
practitioners, cognitive scientists, graphic artists and graphic designers.
We specially encourage young researchers to submit their ideas and results.
Call for Submissions
********************
Submission categories are divided into:
* Full research papers: these will encompass comprehensive descriptions of
original work within the scope of the symposium (limited to 12 pages in
Springer LNCS format).
* Posters: tentative or preliminary results of research or design work with
emphasis on the interdisciplinary evaluation of the ideas (limited to 4
pages in Springer LNCS format). Poster papers will be included in the
proceedings.
* System demonstrations: short descriptions of research or design work that
the authors intend to show and discuss in a demo session at the symposium
(limited to 2 pages in Springer LNCS format). System demonstration papers
will be included in the proceedings.
* Arts track: computer animations, multimedia performance, interactive art,
etc. Artists must submit a three page proposal outlining the concept and
technique of the artwork, including a discussion of the relationship between
smart technologies and their artistic and creative practice. An
international jury of renowned scientists and artists will select the
submissions. Selected works will be displayed during the Smart Graphics
symposium, and presented to the public via an evening of performance,
installation, and gallery exhibition at the compArt Center of Excellence
Digital Art. A report of the arts track including all the selected works
will be included in the proceedings.

3D Microstructure Meeting
Saarbrücken, Germany, November 2nd - 4th, 2011
Across the different disciplines 3D microstructures are an exciting field of
research. Materials scientists provide new insights to understand the
formation of microstructures as well as its consequences for properties,
which might create challenging theoretical problems for natural scientists
but also computer scientists and mathematicians. Equally many of the recent
advances in computer science and mathematics as well as natural sciences
have found useful application in materials science and engineering.
This meeting includes the activities of the workshop "3D Imaging, Analysis,
Modelling and Simulation of Macroscopic Properties" organized by Fraunhofer
ITWM (Katja Schladitz), Institut Carnot Ecole des Mines (Dominique Jeulin)
and TU Kaiserslautern (Claudia Redenbach).

3DIMPVT 2011: Call for Participation in 3D Urban Data Challenge New Extended
Deadline: Feb 28th 2011
Chair: Ioannis Stamos (The City College of New York)
<http://www.3dimpvt.org/challenge.php> http://www.3dimpvt.org/challenge.php
Laser range scanners have now the ability to acquire millions of 3D points
of highly detailed and geometrically complex urban sites, opening new
avenues of exploration in modeling urban environments. The 3D Urban Data
Challenge, in connection with 3DIMPVT 2011 ( <http://www.3dimpvt.org/>
http://www.3dimpvt.org/), is seeking to attract novel algorithms for
processing large point clouds in the city-level.
We will make available two sets of data. The first (NYC) is acquired by
Leica ScanStation2. It contains a number of accurate range scans in New York
City. The second (LEX) is acquired by a mobile laser range scanner. It
includes color + 3D geometry of a downtown strip. Different from the NYC
data set, it includes scans from different times of days. This 4D datasets
offer more redundant data that may make some processing tasks easier.
We are soliciting solutions in the automated detection and classification of
objects of interest or other creative algorithms that use the available
datasets. An example problem to tackle is the detection of window features
that are prominent in urban scenes, as well as cars on street level, major
facades of buildings, balconies, vegetation, street signs, etc. Solutions
that explore and detect regularities in urban scenes are of great interest
as well. Other creative algorithms for solving problems not mentioned in
this document will also be considered.
The contributed solutions will be evaluated by a panel of researchers in the
area of range image processing, and the best ideas will be presented at a
conference session. A summary paper will be included in the MVA journal
special issue for 3DIMPVT 2011.
Interested party should send an email to the challenge chair (Ioannis
Stamos, <mailto:istamos@hunter.cuny.edu> istamos(a)hunter.cuny.edu) to
request data access.
The deadline for submission of results is February 28th, 2011. Each
submission should include a short description about what has been achieved
with the data set.
