AIMS AND SCOPE
Synthesizing realistic natural scenes is a challenging and
important problem in computer graphics. The challenge stems
not only from the complexity and diversity of objects and
natural phenomena interacting together, but also from the
huge amount of small details that should be modeled to obtain
realistic models and physically plausible simulations.
Therefore, there is still a need for interactive modeling and
simulation techniques capable for handling complex synthetic
sceneries. The purpose of this workshop is to explore novel
techniques for modeling, animating, simulating and rendering
complex natural phenomena.
The workshop will build on work done in recent years including
simulating aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant
modeling, ecosystem simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid
flows. It will focus on non-conscious or inanimate nature like
rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows (animals and humans as part
of nature should be excluded). Work in this area, promising as
it is, is still far from complete.
Authors are invited to submit technical papers in these
or related areas. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to:
* Plant structure modeling
* Ecosystem simulation
* Gaseous phenomena (clouds, fog, ...)
* Simulating liquid flows and rain
* Modeling fire and smoke
* Aging and weathering
* Terrain modeling
WORKSHOP FORMAT
The workshop will take place just before the Eurographics 2007
Conference (September 4, Prague, Czech Republic) to encourage
a broad range of participants. As such, it will provide a very
interesting opportunity for researchers that want to attend or

Call for Papers for Computational Aesthetics 2007 (CAe 2007),
held on June 20-22, 2007 in Banff, Alberta, Canada
http://innovis.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/cae2007/
Our ability to convey complex meaning and emotion by the clever
arrangement of symbols and signs is one of the most celebrated aspects
of our human heritage. If Aesthetics is defined as the interaction
between symbol and observer within a social context, then
Computational Aesthetics is the empirically based field that examines
applications of Aesthetics. Computational Aesthetics integrates
aspects of computer science, psychology, and the visual arts, with
particular focus on the mathematical and information theoretic aspects
of symbol processing by humans and computers. By combining insights
from these fields, Computational Aesthetics not only provides tools
for the graphics and visualization communities to increase the value
of displayed imagery and to avoid classical artifacts, but also
furthers our understanding of perception and meaning. Computer based
tools, resulting from Computational Aesthetics research, may also be
used to enhance the expressive power of the fine and applied arts and
to expand the role of aesthetic design as a differentiating factor in
product development and retail sales.
We are pleased to announce the third workshop on Computational
Aesthetics, which will take place in Banff, Alberta, Canada on June
20-22, 2007. It is the third event on this topic following a Workshop
in 2005 in Girona, Spain, and a Dagstuhl seminar in Germany in
2006. This conference will bring together individuals with technical
backgrounds who are developing computer based tools to solve aesthetic
problems and people with artistic and design backgrounds who use these
new tools in their work. Invited talks will be given by leading
technical and artistic/design figures to help participants to better
understand what computer technology is capable of delivering and to
fully appreciate what is involved in the artistic and design
process. Refereed papers will also be presented to provide a snapshot
of the latest technical breakthroughs and the most recent artistic or
design achievements in applying computer based techniques to solve
aesthetic problems. The overriding goal of the conference will be to
facilitate a dialogue between the scientists and engineers who are
creating these new tools and the artists and designers who are the end
users.
Submissions are invited across the broad range of areas covered by
Computational Aesthetics. Specific examples include, but are not
limited to:
* Artistic Image Transformation Techniques (colors, edges,
patterns, dithering)
* Image Analogies, Style Transfer Methods
* Sketching, Simplification techniques (artistic, cognitive)
* Composition, Visual Balance, Layout
* Non-Photorealistic Rendering
* Image Style Analysis (Paintings, Photographs, others)
* Empirically based Metrics of Aesthetical Attributes
* Applied Visual Perception (Color Appearance, Spatial Vision,
and other aspects)
Submitted papers should be original, unpublished work of up to 8
pages. The manuscripts must be written in English. For more
information including paper formatting and submission guidelines see
the website at http://innovis.cpsc.ucalgary.ca/cae2007/ Please note
that this call for technical contributions is complemented by a call
for participation by experts in the visual arts, for details see the
website.

Eurographics 2008 - Crete -
Now that the deadline for full papers for Eurographics 2007 has passed
it is time to start thinking about writing a full paper for Eurographics
2008.
As announced at the General Assembly in Vienna, the conference is moving
to a spring-time slot (February to April period) with paper submission
deadline in late September/early October. In making this decision the
Executive Committee canvased a wide spectrum of interested parties and
concluded that this change would be in the best interests of the
research community so that the submission deadlines for Eurographics and
ACM SIGGRAPH conferences are now widely separated. This change is for a
three year trial period, starting in 2008.
We are delighted to announce that Eurographics 2008 will be held from 14
- 18 APRIL 2008 in Crete. The event is organized by the Foundation for
Research and Technology- Hellas (FORTH), one of the largest research
organisations in Greece, whose activities span a wide range of areas
including molecular biology, biomedical engineering, computer science
and robotics. The co-chairs of the event are Panos Trahanias (FORTH
Institute of Computer Science), Costantine Stephanidis (FORTH Institute
of Computer Science) and Nigel John (University of Wales, Bangor, UK).
The IPC Programme Chairs are George Drettakis (INRIA) and Roberto
Scopigno (ISTI Pisa).
As well as the conference dates, please note NOW in your diaries the key
deadlines for full papers:
+ Deadline for Abstracts: Sept. 21st
+ Paper deadline: Sept 26th
+ Notification of decisions: Nov 19th
The conference web site is under construction at

SG07: 7th International Symposium on SMART GRAPHICS
http://www.smartgraphics.org/
June 25-27 2007
Kyoto, Japan
Submission deadline: Feb 16, 2007
Graphics become Smart Graphics when their design and implementation
are grounded in an understanding of human abilities, activities, and
motivations from design experience and the broad spectrum of cognitive
and social sciences.
When knowledge from these diverse fields is combined with new methods,
tools and techniques in AI, HCI and computer graphics, environments
are created that
(1) engage the user and are esthetically satisfying;
(2) participate in human cognition as external or distributed
representations;
(3) are sensitive to the real-time demands of the interaction in the
context of the available informational and computational
resources; and
(4) adapt the form of the output according to a wider set of
constraints such as an individual's perceptual, attentive, and
motor abilities and the nature of the presentation media and
available interaction devices.
The International Symposium on Smart Graphics brings together people
from the fields of Cognitive Science, Computer Graphics, Artificial
Intelligence and Graphics Design to build this new and emerging area
of study. A partnering event, for which we encourage participation is
the 7th Creativity and Cognition Conference (CC2007).
Another partner-event is the Visual Computing / Graphics & CAD symposium,
which takes place in Osaka, Japan (Jun 23-24).
SG07 welcomes submissions from computer graphics, HCI & AI researchers
and practitioners, cognitive scientists, artists and graphic designers
interested in a theroetically motivated interdisciplinary approach to
the design of interactive visual, auditory, and haptic displays.
It is planned to publish the proceedings in the Springer LNCS series,
as in the previous years (formal approval pending).

Web Page: http://vg.swan.ac.uk/vg07/
Volume graphics deals with the analysis, synthesis and presentation of
volumetric objects, both static and time-varying. Specifically, it
includes topics related to the acquisition, reconstruction and
transformation of volume data as well as feature analysis, information
extraction and rendering. Research papers are solicited that present
original and unpublished results concerning all aspects of volume
graphics. We especially invite research contributions that report
computational techniques derived from existing knowledge in numerical
analysis, signal processing and statistical modeling. Furthermore,
papers are solicited which demonstrate the efficacy of the methods of
volume graphics towards enhanced practices or understanding of
specific applications in engineering, medicine and physical and
biological sciences.
This 6th occurrence of Volume Graphics has been changed from a
Workshop to a Symposium and is again co-located with the Symposium on
Point-Based Graphics 2007 as well as with the Eurographics 2007

Paper length:
There is no fixed maximum length for a paper. However, the magnitude of
the contribution must be proportional to the length of the paper, and
papers longer than eight typeset pages in the final Eurographics format
must make a very significant contribution to get accepted. Papers of
four or fewer pages will be held to a less strict standard of citation
and description of related work (comparison to the strongest alternative
techniques is still important, but an exhaustive review is not
necessary). All accepted papers are treated equally, i.e., printed in
the proceedings and presented at the conference.
Submission info:
Authors are invited to upload papers electronically in Adobe PDF format
by visiting http://www.graphicshardware.org/submissions.html.
Submissions should follow the formatting guidelines on
http://www.eg.org/publications/guidelines/. We encourage anonymous

To facilitate sending announcements to those interested in Graphics
Hardware, we have moved our mailing list onto a listserv. We hope this
will be more convenient for attendees, organizers, and all others who
are interested in graphics hardware alike. We promise this will be an
low-volume mailing list, limited to the call for papers, the
announcement of the GH program, and the wrapup email. To subscribe or
unsubscribe, visit
