Graphics become Smart Graphics when their design and implementation are
grounded in an understanding of human abilities, activities, and motivations
from design experience and the broad spectrum of cognitive and social
sciences.
When knowledge from these diverse fields is combined with new methods,
tools and techniques in AI, HCI and computer graphics, environments are
created that:
(1) engage the user and are aesthetically satisfying;
(2) participate in human cognition as external or distributed representations;
(3) are sensitive to the real-time demands of the interaction in the context of
the available informational and computational resources;
(4) adapt the form of the output according to a wider set of constraints such as
an individual's perceptual, attentive, and motor abilities and the nature
of the presentation media and available interaction devices.
The International Symposium on Smart Graphics aims at gathering people
from the fields of Cognitive Science, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence
and Graphics Design to share experiences and experiments in this new and
emerging area of study.

Smart Graphics 2009 welcomes submissions from researchers and
practitioners, as well as artists and graphic designers interested in an
interdisciplinary approach to the design of smart interactive visual, auditory,
and haptic displays.
Submission categories are divided into:
* Full research papers: these will encompass comprehensive descriptions of
original work within the scope of the symposium (limited to 12 pages in
Springer LNCS format).
* Posters: tentative or preliminary results of research or design work with
emphasis on the interdisciplinary evaluation of the ideas (limited to 4 pages
in Springer LNCS format). Poster papers will be included in the
proceedings.
* System demonstrations: short descriptions of research or design work that
the authors intend to show and discuss in a demo session at the symposium
(limited to 2 pages in Springer LNCS format). System demonstration papers
will be included in the proceedings.
* Arts track: computer animations, interactive art, digital music, hybrid art,
etc. A two-three page proposal outlining the concept and technique of the
artwork. An international jury of renowned scientists and artists will select
the submissions that best represent the idea of <<Smart Graphics
Arts>>. Selected works will be exhibited during the Smart
Graphics symposium, within the framework of the 5th International
Arts Festival of Castilla y León. A report of the art track including all the
selected works will be included in the proceedings. The best piece will be
awarded and its author will be invited to the sysmposium.
Smartgraphics specially encourages young researchers to submit their ideas
and results. As in previous conferences, proceedings will be published in the
Springer Lecture Note in Computer Science (LNCS) series.

Smart Graphics, beyond a conventional conference, will be intertwined with
the 5th International Arts Festival of Castilla y León
(http://www.festivalcyl.com/), and we invite artists, technologists and scholars
from all disciplines to convene in Salamanca, May 28-30, 2009. Both during
the Smart Graphics Symposium and during the Festival (May 29-June 15)
workshops, system demonstrations, exhibitions, performances, panels and
open discussions related to how information technology is provided to the
society and how art is evolving and taking advantage of technological
artifacts in its quest of new artistic forms, will become part of the unique
streets and buildings of UNESCO's World Heritage city of Salamanca.

Call:
A new wave of interactive 3D applications rises from the World Wide Web. New
technologies are emerging and existing technologies are evolving to enable
the third dimension in web browsers. This also leads to the appearance of a
new generation of consumers and producers of 3D content in the new
Read-Write Web environment.
14th in the series, the Web3D 2009 International Symposium will address this
wide range of topics covering 3D hypermedia on the web. The annual Web3D
Symposium is a major event, which unites researchers, developers,
experimenters, and content creators in a dynamic learning environment.
Attendees share and explore methods of using, enhancing, and creating new 3D
web and multimedia technologies, such as X3D, VRML, COLLADA, Croquet, MPEG4,
Java3D, and Canvas3D. The symposium will also address new trends such as
interactive 3D graphics applications on mobile devices.
Authors are invited to submit their work (short or full papers) for review
by the international Program Committee. Both research and applications
papers are of interest to Web3D 2009. The papers must be innovative and
contribute to the advancement of 3D multimedia technologies on the web.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Interactive 3D graphics and immersive systems for servers, desktop and
thin clients
* High-performance 3D graphics for Virtual Worlds, MMO environments, Mixed
and Augmented Reality, and interactive on-line gaming

Authors are invited to submit full papers of up to 9 pages (including
figures and references) or short papers of up to 4 pages (including figures
and references) in PDF format via the Symposium Submission Site. Papers must
be formatted using the document templates for conferences sponsored by ACM
SIGGRAPH. After acceptance, the final revised paper is required also in
camera-ready electronic form. Accepted papers will appear in the Symposium
Proceedings, published by ACM Press.

SHREC'09 - 3D Shape Retrieval Contest 2009

*Introduction*
The general objective of the 3D Shape Retrieval Contest (see
http://www.aimatshape.net/event/SHREC) is to evaluate the
effectiveness of 3D-shape retrieval algorithms. After three
years of success, the contest is now organized in conjunction
with the Eurographics Workshop on 3D Object Retrieval, where
the evaluation results will be presented and printed in the
corresponding workshop proceedings published by the Eurographics
Book Series.
The participants of each track will collectively write a paper,
which will be published in the proceedings of the Eurographics
Workshop 3D Object Retrieval. At least one author per track must
register for the workshop, and present the results.

Aims and Scope
Synthesizing realistic natural scenes is a challenging and important
problem in computer graphics. The challenge stems not only from the
complexity and diversity of objects and natural phenomena interacting
together, but also from the huge amount of small details that should be
modeled to obtain realistic models and physically plausible simulations.
Therefore, there is still a need for interactive modeling and simulation
techniques capable for handling complex synthetic sceneries.
The purpose of this workshop is to explore novel techniques for modeling,
animating, simulating and rendering complex natural phenomena.
The workshop will build on work done in recent years including simulating
aging and weathering of synthetic objects, plant modeling, ecosystem
simulation, gaseous phenomena and liquid flows. It will focus on non
conscious or inanimate nature like rock, trees, oceans, wind, meadows
(animals and humans as part of nature should be excluded). Work in this
area, promising as it is, is still far from complete. Authors are invited to
submit technical papers in these or related areas. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
- Plant structure modeling
- Ecosystem simulation
- Gaseous phenomena (clouds, fog)
- Simulating liquid flows and rain
- Modeling fire and smoke
- Aging and weathering

SCOPE
3D imaging sensors have been investigated for several decades. In recent
years, improvements on classical approaches such as stereo vision and
structured light on the one hand, and novel ToF-techniques on the other hand
have emerged, leading to 3D vision systems with radically improved
characteristics. Presently, these techniques make full-range 3D data
available
at interactive frame rates, and thus open the path towards a much broader
application of 3D vision systems.
The workshop focuses on sensor systems, data processing approaches and
systems
incorporating interactive, full-range 3D sensors in specific application
areas.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Development of full-range 3D sensors or sensor systems, including
- active and passive 3D imaging systems
- sensor simulation
* Multi sensor fusion incorporating full-range 3D sensors

GENERAL INFORMATION

SCOPE
3D imaging sensors have been investigated for several decades. In recent
years, improvements on classical approaches such as stereo vision and
structured light on the one hand, and novel ToF-techniques on the other hand
have emerged, leading to 3D vision systems with radically improved
characteristics. Presently, these techniques make full-range 3D data
available
at interactive frame rates, and thus open the path towards a much broader
application of 3D vision systems.
The workshop focuses on sensor systems, data processing approaches and
systems
incorporating interactive, full-range 3D sensors in specific application
areas.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Development of full-range 3D sensors or sensor systems, including
- active and passive 3D imaging systems
- sensor simulation
* Multi sensor fusion incorporating full-range 3D sensors
* Data processing for dynamic full-range 3D-data, including
- calibration techniques
- sensor based image synthesis
- 3D object recognition and tracking
- 3D optical flow
* Applications using interactive, full-range 3D sensors, e.g. in
areas like
- autonomous robotics
- medicine and health care
- industrial automation
- surveillance
- human-machine interaction
- automotive
Noval results of theoretical and practical significance based on interactive
3D vision will be considered.

Eurographics 2009 Workshop on 3D object retrieval

3D content is now widely recognized as the upcoming wave of digital media. Inexperience and professional users are becoming more and more actively involved in the content creation pipeline and ask for intuitive and effective tools for creating, sharing, retrieving and re-using 3D content. Search and retrieval of 3D objects is therefore rapidly become a key issue in the upcoming panorama of multimedia content, both in general usage scenarios, such as online gaming or 3D social networks, and in scientific domains, such as molecular biology and medicine. The development of efficient search mechanisms is required for the effective retrieval of 3D objects from large repositories, both of a single class (such as human faces) and across classes.
The aim of this workshop is to stimulate researchers from different fields (computer vision, computer graphics, machine learning, human-computer interaction, semantic web) who work on the common goal of 3D object retrieval, to present state-of-the-art work in the field and thus provide a cross-fertilization ground that will stimulate discussions on the next steps in this important research area.
