3D Object Retrieval Workshop Series
--------------------------------------------
Search engines are now the default way in which most people engage with
information, as the vast majority of information is born digital. Also,
a new wave of information is underway: low-cost 3D scanners, 3D
printers, and powerful modeling software have made 3D models appeal to
an increasing audience. Repositories of 3D objects are rapidly growing
in both number and size. Yet, the task of exploring such large 3D
repositories and retrieving the models of interest remains a challenging
problem. It is crucial to develop algorithms for content-based searching
of 3D object collections; creating compact and accurate descriptors for
3D objects; creating efficient storage structures for databases of 3D
objects; investigating theoretical aspects of practical importance, such
as the definition of the similarity concept; interfaces for
content-based 3D object search; visualization techniques for 3D search
results; real time aspects of techniques and algorithms; new challenges
such as faceted 3D browsing, social search, and navigation of hybrid
datasets. The complex yet concrete problems above are drawing increasing
attention from the research community.
The aim of the 3DOR Workshop series is to stimulate researchers from
different fields such as Computer Vision, Computer Graphics, Machine
Learning, Cognitive Science and Human-Computer Interaction who work on
or are interested in 3D object retrieval search and exploration, to
present state-of-the-art work in the field or learn about it and
participate in discussions. This will provide a cross-fertilization that
will stimulate discussions on the next steps in this important research
area. 3DOR 2017 will be the 10th workshop in this series.

PhD proposal – VisUrba project
Visualization of multi layered spatio-‐temporal 3D urban datasets
Keywords: urban data, geovisualisation, user study
Background, Context:
The understanding of complex spatio-‐temporal urban data is a critical challenge in urban planning as the stakeholders have to take into account numerous constraints related to various domains embedding sustainable, social and economical concerns.
To tackle this problem, geovisualization uses methods based on human perception and cognition to show the underlying meaning of spatio-‐temporal datasets. This PhD thesis proposes to explore visualization methods in various 3D environments (Desktop, VR, AR, SAR) to find the best solution for a given user task (exploration, decision) at a given
urban scale (building, street, district, etc.).
This PhD in information visualization takes place into an pluridisciplinary environment (computer science, geoinformation, humanities): the CRENAU team of the AAU lab ( <http://crenau.archi.fr/)%2Cwhich> http://crenau.archi.fr/),which is a founding member of the IRSTV research institute (www.irstv.fr), and the IVC team of the IRCCyN lab ( <http://www.irccyn.ec-/> http://www.irccyn.ec-‐ nantes.fr/fr/equipes/ivc).
Research subject, work plan:
The work is about displaying spatio-‐temporal urban data in an effective way. Based on the user's profile, behavior and task, the most appropriate visualization type and data quality will be estimated. More precisely, this PhD thesis proposes to consider each data as a layer that will be processed according to the data type and the required levels of detail as well as the display context. The data model will be based on standards
currently used in GIS and/or BIM communities. User tests will be conducted to evaluate
the quality of proposed solutions. The research challenges include both visualization solution proposal and the construction of an evaluation framework for information visualization.

In an initiative to help support the participation of European students at
the 2017 SIGGRAPH conference, the Institute of Science and Technology (IST)
Austria is launching a competition to support strong European SIGGRAPH
volunteers with travel funds to and from the 2017 SIGGRAPH Conference.
All students currently enrolled at institutions in Europe who are also
applying to the SIGGRAPH volunteers program are eligible to apply.
Application materials are a subset as for the SIGGRAPH volunteers program,
and should include a current transcript (official or unofficial) or an
enrollment verification letter from your institution's registrar, the name
of the school and program you are currently enrolled in, expected graduation
year, and a short statement answering the following two questions:
1) The SIGGRAPH Student Volunteer Program brings in students from all over
the world each year who are passionate about computer graphics,
service-oriented, and inspired to be the industry leaders of tomorrow. Tell
us why you would like to be considered for participation in the SIGGRAPH
Student Volunteer Program. What interests you about SIGGRAPH in particular,
and why would you be a good fit for our team this year?
2) SIGGRAPH brings in thousands of attendees from all over the world every
year. Student Volunteers play a very crucial role in helping attendees to
have a worthwhile conference experience. Because of this, Student Volunteers
must exhibit a very strong ability to work with a wide range of cultural
differences. Tell us about a time when you interacted with individuals from
a different background than your own, and outline what you learned from your
experience.
All application materials should be sent as a single pdf to
<mailto:siggraphsvcontest@ist.ac.at> siggraphsvcontest(a)ist.ac.at no later
than Jan 10th 2017.
Application materials will be reviewed by IST Austria Computer Graphics
faculty Bernd Bickel and Chris Wojtan. Applicants will be evaluated on the
potential for a career in Computer Graphics. Consideration will be
conditional on acceptance to the SIGGRAPH volunteers program, and priority
will be given to students studying towards their bachelor's or master's
degrees in a computer graphics-related field. The winners of the competition
will be awarded with travel funds of up to 1000 euros to cover the costs of
transportation and accommodation at the conference. Candidates will be
